Summer Program of the Week:

Middle School Intensive Instumental Workshop
Includes the Middle School Clarinet, Trumpet and Horn Institutes

August 16-20, 2010
8:30am-5:30pm

Students with at least two yeas of experience on their instrument will enjoy a comprehensive music program that combines the performing arts with summer fun! 

Workshops for
flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, low brass, violin/viola, and cello will focus on specific skills, techniques, repertoire and ensembles.

Opportunities for working with music technology are also available for an extra fee.

Instrument-specific classes, formerly called Institutes, will take place for half the day. Professional faculty will gear activities for this age group and will include:

  • Basic Technique: tone, breathing, range, pitch accuracy, intonation, articulations, dynamic range, scales, fingerings, bowings, hand & body positioning, embouchure, etc.
  • Reading Skills: rhythm patterns, note accuracy, key signatures, sight-reading, visual to sound connections and lots of practice
  • Solo Playing: coaching on solo preparation, mock auditions, audition techniques, tone and sound production specific to solo playing
  • Ensemble Playing:  independent part playing in two to four part ensemble music focusing on an introduction to small ensemble playing skills and musical independence
  • Preparation for Regional Auditions

Afternoon classes will include music writing, music history, ear-training, beginning improvisation, chorus, and will be designed to provide new artistic experiences, refine participants’ musical skills, foster a broader understanding of the arts and yet still be fun and summer-focused.

Half-day options are available for the morning Intensive Intrumental Workshops.

    Margaret Helen Ashford
    (2004-2009)
     
    Margaret Ashford, died on October 15, 2009 at the age of five, after a valiant battle with cancer. Margaret was a beautiful young dancer whose spirit will long be felt and remembered by the students, faculty, staff and families of the Hartt Community Division. 
     
    The Margaret Ashford Memorial Scholarship for Young Dancers was created by Margaret's dance friends.  This endowed fund will provide an annual scholarship to a young dancer enrolled at the Hartt Community Division.
