In the Community Division

Local and National


All private lesson students in the Community Division are eligible for participation in our Honors Concerts (Senior Honors is open to Grades 9-12 by recommendation and audition; Junior Honors is open to younger students by teacher nomination). There are also a wide variety of scholarships and music competitions open to our students. Some are held here at The Hartt School Community Division and others are sponsored by groups across the country .

In the Community Division

Evelyn Bonar Storrs Scholarships (March): given to student with the best performance at the Senior Piano Honors Auditions. The winning student will receive a scholarship for full one-hour lessons for the year. The second-place students will receive a scholarship for 1/2 hour lessons for the year. Eleventh grade students and below in the year of the audition are eligible.

Jeffrey Quinn Morrison Memorial Prize (March): awarded to the best performance by a Senior at the Piano Honors Auditions. The award is a presentation of a music book.

Francine Goldfarb Scholarship: This is a talent based award is a $2000 scholarship given annually to a single Dance Department Intensive Program student in level A through F Ballet. Recipients are chosen who demonstrate artistic and physical gifts, commensurate with a professional career in dance, continuity of study and commitment to the School including involvement in Performance Ensembles. This scholarship has been made possible thanks to the generosity of Bob and Frankie Goldfarb.

Watson Morrison Piano Scholarship Fund (March): awarded to the best performance by a middle school student at the Piano Honors Auditions. The award is a scholarship for private lessons at the Hartt Community Division in the amount of $400 to be awarded at the Honors Concert. To donate money to this prize, click here.

Abraham M. Huang Memorial Award : for the best performance in the Senior String Honors Audition by a student who is not a senior. The award is a scholarship for 1/2 hour lessons for the year. An additional prize will be given to a graduating senior and will be a gift deemed appropriate by the department chair.

John Jorgensen Memorial Cello Scholarship: presented to a middle school cellist who has been nominated to perform in the Junior String Honors Concert in honor of John Jorgensen. The award is given to a student who exhibits commitment to the instrument and to the school, has steadily shown improvement during the current year, and plays musically and with a beautiful tone. The prize is awarded at the Junior Honors concert each spring and is a $500 credit towards private lesson tuition at the Hartt Community Division.

The Bel canto Scholarship Award - will be presented to a talented vocalist with special interest in opera who has been nominated to perform in the Voice Honors Concert. The award is given to a student who exhibits commitment to vocal instruction and to the school, has steadily shown improvement during the current year and sings with expressive qualities and strong technique. Students in eleventh grade and lower are eligible. The scholarship is awarded at the Voice Honors Concert each spring and is a $1200 credit towards private lesson tuition at The Hartt School Community Division.

Honors Departmental Awards: Based on auditions, tuition awards in the amount of $200 are granted to a non-senior for the Guitar, Winds and Percussion Departments. In addition, senior prizes are awarded (chosen by Department Chair), also based on the auditions.  These prizes recognize the best performances at each honors audition, and reflect the Community Division's commitment to recognizing and supporting talented students.

The Louis Pellettieri Award : for a graduating senior who has participated successfully in many programs of the Hartt Community Division over a number of years, and plans to major (or minor) in music in college. The recipient of this award is chosen by the Director of the Community Division after receiving nominations from faculty. The honored student will receive a $100 award and plaque.

Alice Guego Kaeser Honors Chamber Music Group Scholarship : provides free tuition to the chamber music program for a string quartet, a woodwind quintet, a brass quintet, and one more group at the school's discretion, who exhibit a high performance level and a commitment to chamber music. The Honors Groups are required to perform in school-sponsored activities twice each year plus two additional performances at other events. For more information on eligibility and requirements, contact the office. The award is a full one-year scholarship for chamber music tuition.

Connecticut Youth Symphony Awards (May): a scholarship in the amount of $250 toward Hartt Community Division private lessons is given to an underclassmen CYS member. The award is given each spring at a CYS concert to a student who demonstrates leadership, performance strength, and good character within the organization. Additionally, a senior will be a given a cash award for $75 based on the same criteria.

Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble Awards (May): a scholarship in the amount of $250 toward Hartt Community Division private lessons is given to an underclassmen GHYWE member. The award is given each spring at a GHYWE concert to a student who demonstrates leadership, performance strength, and good character within the organization. Additionally, a senior will be given a cash award for $75 based on the same criteria.

Laurel Music Camp Awards : provides tuition relief for two students who attended Laurel Music Camp and were chosen by the faculty of the camp for the quality of their performance to receive the award. The award consists of a scholarship for one semester of half-hour lessons.

Local and National Competitions

Simone Belsky Piano Competition ~

Run through the Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford , CT
Originally founded in 1984 and managed by Litchfield Performing Arts, Inc, this 11 th Biennial competition is moving to Hartford in partnership with our church.  We are reaching out to piano faculty and graduate students in an effort to broaden the exposure of this competition and to attract the best possible applicants.  It is our intent to expand this exciting event and increase the prize in coming cycles.

Why faculty and grad students?  Because this competition is designed for performers 30 years of age or older who are committed to pursuing a performance career.  In addition to the $2000 cash award, the winner of the Simone Belsky Piano Competition will be contracted to perform on the very successful Asylum Hill Arts Series in downtown Hartford .  The Award Committee will also work with other regional groups to secure additional performances.

The deadline to apply is August 15, 2007.  The Competition is Sunday, October 28, 2007.  Please review the materials and get back to me if you have further questions.

The Hartford Chorale ~ Two FULL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS for high school and college students ~ These programs will offer an opportunity for high school and college students over the age of 16 to learn and perform challenging choral repertoire and to perform with professional instrumental musicians at no cost . Under the programs, the interns will be mentored and their participation will be tracked by a senior member or the Chorale. At the end of each semester they will also submit an evaluation designed to reflect their individual level and be eligible to receive credit from their educational institution. Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Program (February): one student is selected from each state to take part in this wonderful summer program in Washington, D.C. Click here to download an application.

The Musical Club of Hartford (January): hosts the Connecticut High School Music Competition and offers the Gifts and Scholarship Fund (Woodwinds, Strings, and Voice). For more information and to download an application form, click here.

MTNA Competitions (January): sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association.

Audrey Thayer Piano Competition (March): sponsored by the Connecticut State Music Teachers Association.

Renee B Fisher Piano Competitions , Westport, CT (April/May): hosted by the Care of Neighborhood Music School. Monetary prizes for Elementary/Middle School, High School and Teacher Recognition Awards. Deadline for 2005 competition is January 29, 2005. Hartford Symphony Young Artists Competition (April): Concerto Competition for students in grades 9-12.

Symphony at Simsbury (January): open to Simsbury public school students in grades 7-12. Students audition to play a concerto with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.

The New York Piano Competition: for students Age 14-18

Young Musicians Competition (March): co-sponsored by the Hillstead Museum and the Hartt Community Division. PLEASE NOTE: Hillstead is not running their Young Artist Competition this year 2007/2008.  They are reworking the competition and will touch base with us in 2009 to continue the program in its new format.

Manchester Young Artists Competition (May): a piano competition with application forms due in April and auditions in May. Click here for an Information Sheet and an Application .

2008 Queenstown Violin Summer School to be held January 14-26, 2008
Note: January is summer in New Zealand !

We are pleased to present the 2008 Queenstown Violin Summer School to be held 14-26 January 2008. Attached are PDF copies of the 2008 season brochure and application poster. These documents are also available online on the School's website: www.qvss.com . The program is for advanced young violinists, and is held in Queenstown , New Zealand .

Applications/Auditions are due 1 October 2007.
