Purpose of the Advisory Board
The purposes of The Hartt School Community Division Advisory Board are:
- to further the development of the Community Division and maintain its quality;
- to promote the Community Division and assist it in becoming a major cultural asset;
- to provide counsel concerning educational policies, programs, and budget of the Community Division
- to act as an advocate for the Community Division
- to financially support the Community Division and to develop fundraising plans

About the Advisory Board
Members, nominated first and then elected, serve on one of four committeess meeting regularly and also attend a meeting a few times per year as an entire board. The board consists of between 20 and 40 members who serve a term of two years. The committees work under the guidance of selected Hartt Community Division staff.

Committees
Support for Access Committee Responsibilities:
- Continue the work of the previous Fund for Access committee, including raising money for the Fund. The committee also will support the Community Division's other access programs -- Gifts of Music, Boys & Girls Club, Salvation Army, and the Dance Program for City Youth. (Such support might include, for example, helping to obtain dance outfits or string instruments.)
- Educate the community about these programs.
- Develop a mentoring program, so that older Community Division students can help younger students in access programs.
- Develop ways for Community Division constituency to be involved with these programs.
Marketing Committee Responsibilities:
- Connect with and support Community Division's marketing and promotion plan, including
- Developing ideas
- Distributing materials to local communities
- Providing information/updates to local newspapers
- Providing volunteer man hours, e.g., helping input information
- Be at major performances/community events in the Hartford area, to provide information about the Community Division, and/or coordinate volunteers to do so.
- Help with Bushnell pre-concert performances.
- Inquire about convention center outreach

Hospitality/Social Committee Responsibilities:
- Audition Day greeting table & faculty lunch
- Faculty receptions (no need to do every year, though)
- Community Division-wide welcoming events for families, such as a fall Bushnell Carousel Day
- Organize any special events, e.g., a Waltz Night or an adult-only wine & appetizer evening
- Coordinate with directors of major ensembles to provide support they need. This would include finding parent representatives to help organize post-concert receptions.
Fundraising Committee Responsibilities:
- Help create a wish-list for the school and particular programs, and find ways to obtain the items, including through communications to Community Division constituency.
- Support the Community Division's development efforts.
- Assist with grant writing.
- Make contacts for the school.

Meetings and Governance
The Advisory Board is led by an Executive Committee consisting of a Chairperson, one or more Vice-Chairpersons, Secretary, and the Director of the Community Division.
Meetings are held twice each semester; other meetings may be called at the discretion of the Chairperson. Notice of meetings will be given by mail at least one week prior to the scheduled date.
In addition to the full board meetings, committees will meet several times per year under consultation of the appropriate Community Division staff member.

Volunteer
If you would like to volunteer, but are not able to become an Advisory Board member, please consider joining one of our four committees which are open to non-board members. There are many ways to volunteer your time at whatever level you are able to commit.
