Assistant Director for Dance and Off-Campus Programs (full time)

Responsibilities: The Assistant Director for Dance and Off-Campus Programs is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Dance Department and the Simsmore Square facility of The Hartt School Community Division (HCD).  The Assistant Director for Dance and Off-Campus Programs is instrumental in the planning, coordination and execution of all dance department and Simsmore Square activities including, but not limited to, student registration, class and teaching schedules, performances, auditions and other special events.

As the principal liaison for the department, the Assistant Director for Dance and Off-Campus Programs cultivates and maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, parents and members of the community and works collaboratively with the Chair of the HCD Dance Department and faculty of the The Hartt School BFA program.

The Assistant Director for Dance and Off-Campus Programs supervises a full-time Dance Administrator, the part-time Receptionists at the Handel Center and Simsmore Square and a part-time Special Events Coordinator.  The position works closely with the HCD Director and Associate Director to design marketing and promotional plans for the Dance Department and Simsmore Square, assists in the development and oversight of the Dance Department and Simsmore Square budgets in an effort to ensure prudent fiscal management and identifies performance and educational opportunities as well as assists in the development of Dance Department programs as necessary and appropriate.

This position reports to the Associate Director of the Community Division.

Qualifications:  A Bachelor’s Degree is required.  The successful candidate will have three or more years experience as an administrator in the arts and/or other non-profit environment.  A thorough understanding of dance and music education processes is preferred.  The Assistant Director for Dance and Off-Campus Programs is someone who loves children and has the ability to interact appropriately with students, faculty and parents in every phase of the learning process.

Compensation:  Salary is commensurate with experience

The renowned dance department at The Hartt School Community Division carries on the tradition and high quality of the School of the Hartford Ballet, providing a comprehensive training curriculum for children, adults and pre-professional dancers.  The department offers year-round classes in many areas of dance interest and ability for ages three and up.

Dance Skills Specialist - Chair, Dance Department (full time)

Responsibilities: The Chair of Dance of The Hartt School Community Division provides pedagogical oversight and artistic leadership for the varied programs of the department, including intensive ballet, children’s ballet and adult dance. A significant amount of studio teaching of intermediate and advanced ballet, Pointe and repertory is expected. The Chair also works collaboratively with The Hartt School BFA programs in Ballet Pedagogy and Children’s Dance; and supervises the collegiate teacher internship program. Additional collegiate teaching duties are assigned as appropriate, including ballet, Pointe, repertory, and Music for the Ballet Studio. This position reports to the Director of the Community Division, supervises the Community Division dance faculty and works closely with two full-time dance administrators.

Qualifications: A Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance and/or comparable training, teaching, performance and choreography experience in a professional caliber dance academy/company is required. The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of ballet pedagogy and familiarity with other dance pedagogies, including modern, jazz and tap. The candidate will have multiple years teaching experience and a clear track record of training young dancers. The Chair of the dance department is someone who loves children and has the ability to interact appropriately with both students and parents in every phase of the learning process.

The department offers year-round classes in many areas of dance interest and ability for ages three and up.

The more serious dancer may choose the intensive program, a comprehensive dance curriculum with a focus on either ballet or modern dance. Instruction is given two days a week and increasing up to six days per week depending upon the track the student chooses to take.

Official Title: The Hartt School Community Division Event Coordinator

The Event Coordinator is primarily responsible for dance and early childhood music birthday parties as well as special group events.  Birthday parties include: Ballet Birthdays for young children, Hip/Hop or Broadway Birthdays for "tweens" and teens and First Steps in Music Birthday Parties.  Group Events include:  Meet the Sugar Plum Faerie Event, Dance me a Story Event, Girl Scout Dance Merit Badge programs and more.  The Event Coordinator is also be responsible coordinating various school events including social events, hospitality for special performances, fundraising events and other opportunities as needed.

The person interested in this position must posses the following skills and qualities:

  • Strong leadership/managerial skills : will at times need to hire and manage “party helpers” and/or coordinate volunteers. The Event Coordinator must coordinate and manage many events (small and large), ensure events are managed financially and at all times be an advocate and representative of The Hartt School Community Division.
  • Exceptional organizational skills : will need to organize all aspects of parties and events including scheduling; maintain an inventory of party and event supplies; create and reconcile budgets for individual events; and manage the party/event schedule
  • Outstanding Communication Skills: The Event Coordinator will need to respond to inquiries, work directly with staff & faculty at all Community Division locations, coordinate help (paid & volunteer), and communicate effectively to Community Division Administration.
  • Creative and Innovative: The Event Coordinator must enjoy arts & crafts and be able to create new craft and activity ideas that are consistent with the theme of the parties and events. Will need to develop new party and event ideas.
  • Strong Customer Service Skills: Your regular customers will be parents and children. The Event Coordinator must have a love and ability of working with children and posses strong customer service skills when working with all adults and children on behalf of The Hartt School Community Division.

The Hartt School Community Division Event Coordinator will report to the Director of Off Campus Programs and Facilities. The Events Coordinator will have an office at The Hartt Dance and Opera Center in Hartford but must be willing to lead events at all of The Hartt School Community Division locations (currently Hartford, Simsbury & West Hartford). There is some light lifting required: folding tables, carpets, chairs, craft boxes etc. Comfort on a computer is also required; individuals must maintain excel spreadsheets documenting events, communicate via email, update brochures for parties, and other miscellaneous items.

The Event Coordinator will work on an “as need” basis and is responsible for creating his/her own schedule. There is not a guaranteed number of hours worked; hours are based on the number of events scheduled by the event coordinator according to current demand for parties and events. Birthday parties are typically desired on weekday afternoons and weekends.

The person hired to fill the Event Coordinator position must spend time training at each location so they will be able to fully understand the organization they represent. Training will be paid.

Faculty (full-time):

  • Suzuki Orchestra Director
    Duties:
    Responsibilities include directing five Suzuki Orchestras, teaching lessons and classes on your specific instrument of study. There are two 17-week semesters and one optional 6-week summer session. Tremendous potential exists since we are part of a large university and a collegiate conservatory. Additional Suzuki training included in salary. Performance opportunities available in the area. Qualifications: A person who loves children and displays an engaging personality. Bachelor's degree in music required. SAA registered teacher training through book 5 required. Additional training is available through the University of Hartford fromTeri Einfeldt and/or Michele George. First Steps in Music Teacher (part-time):

Responsibilities include: Teaching First Steps in Music classes (newborns through age five along with parents); preparing appropriate lesson plans as related to the curriculum; and some related administrative duties. There are three 10-week semesters and other summer sessions available. Immediate expectations include teaching 12 classes per week based upon enrollment; potential exists for significant growth.

Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in music and/or early childhood education is required. Training in the First Steps in Music program is required, although a strong candidate in early childhood music could begin teaching while simultaneously studying the curriculum; training will be provided at no cost to the employee. The successful candidate is someone who loves children and has the ability to interact appropriately with both students and parents attending the class.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience
