Words from the Director

Music and Dance Make a Difference

There are many reasons to study the performing arts.  Our spiritual well-being depends on our ability to communicate the language of emotion.  When mere words are not enough, we can explore the balance of consonance and dissonance in music, appreciate the beauty of the human body through dance, and enjoy the sonic and visual patterns in the performing arts that are metaphors for life itself.

There are practical advantages for personal development as well. Young people who study the performing arts are much more likely to succeed academically and professionally.  Valuable skills such as focus, discipline, critical listening, persistence and teamwork are directly transferable to other walks of life.

Sometimes though, the performing arts can reach out to help in the most basic of ways.  The performing arts utilized in the service of community can have a powerful effect - providing artistic experiences for the aged and underprivileged, banding together as a community to do good works.

That is why I am asking all Community Division students and families to participate in a special Practice-a-thon to raise money for the chronically hungry. Hunger is a significant problem in Greater Hartford - one that affects 100,000 people in our community. Chronic hunger exacerbates many of the social problems in our area, including problem pregnancies, the incidence of premature, high-risk birth, and children too listless or restless to pay attention in school. Teens living with food insecurity are more likely to have health problems, get into trouble, use drugs or alcohol, drop out of school and attempt suicide. Chronically hungry individuals are more prone to drug and alcohol abuse and are more likely to commit crimes in pursuit of food or the means to get food.

Our mission will be to strengthen our students’ home and studio practice habits while combating the scourge of hunger in our community.  From Friday, May 1 through Sunday, May 10, students of the Hartt Community Division will commit to daily home practice or studio time for dancers.  Each student will find sponsors willing to pledge a small amount of money for each minute practiced. The collective result will demonstrate how the performing arts can truly make a difference for those in are community who are most in need.

Watch closely for details in the coming weeks.

Dr. Mark George, Director

TWO MUSICAL GEMS AT HARTT THIS APRIL

The Hartt School presents the musicals 110 in the Shade and The Fantasticks, in repertory, Thursday through Sunday, April 23 to 26, at the Kent McCray Theater, Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center, 35 Westbourne Pkwy, Hartford.  Admission is $20 with discounts for seniors, students, and groups.  Please call the University Box Office at 860.768.4228 or 800.274.8587 or visit www.hartford.edu/hartt for tickets and more information.

Based on Nash's 1954 play The Rainmaker, with Book/lyrics by Tom Jones; music by Harvey Schmidt, 110 in the Shade focuses on Lizzie Curry, a spinster living on a ranch in the American southwest, and her relationships with local sheriff File, a cautious divorcé who fears being hurt again, and charismatic con man Bill Starbuck, posing as a rainmaker who promises the locals he can bring relief to the drought-stricken area.  Sarah Killough of Duluth, MN (pictured), stars as Lizzy Curry.  Directed by Alan Rust, 110 in the Shade plays on Thursday, April 23 at 7:30 PM, Saturday, April 25 at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, April 26 at 2 PM.

The Fantasticks is the longest-running musical in the world, and with good reason: at the heart of its breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that transcends cultural barriers. The result is a timeless fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time.  A moving tale of young lovers who become disillusioned, only to discover a more mature and meaningful love, is punctuated by a bountiful series of memorable songs such as “Try to Remember”, many of which have become standards.  Hartt senior Ardis Barrow (pictured) of Lenox, MA, stars as Luisa.  With book/lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, The Fantasticks is directed by Michael John McGann, and plays on Friday, April 24 at 7:30 PM, Saturday, April 25 at 2 PM, and Sunday, April 26 7:30 PM.

The Hartt School is the comprehensive performing arts conservatory of the University of Hartford that offers innovative degree programs in music, dance, and theatre.  With more than 400 concerts, recitals, plays, master classes, dance performances, and musical theatre productions a year, performance is central to Hartt’s curriculum.  For more information on The Hartt School, visit www.hartford.edu/hartt.

All’s Fair in Love and War?!

The Avery Ensemble Concert Series Final Program of the Series this weekend!

Avery Ensemble will perform the third and final program of their All’s Fair in Love and War?! series this Friday, April 3, at 7:30 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, 120 Sigourney Street in Hartford. For this special program, entitled Lest We Forget, the ensemble’s regular personnel, Adriana Jarvis—piano, Annie Trépanier—violin, Steve Larson—viola, and Hans Twitchell—cello, will be joined by special guests baritone Chai-Lun Yueh and violinist Andrea Schultz.

8

Tickets are $20 ($10 for students and children).

For reservations, please email info@averyensemble.org or tel.(860)523-8931.

Additional performances of Lest We Forget will take place in Willimantic (April 4), New London (April 17) and Pittsfield, MA (April 18). Please visit www.averyensemble.org for more details.

Featuring music for piano, strings and voice, Lest We Forget is a collection of musical reflections on war and hope. The first half of this program confronts the listener with three dark and powerful images of crisis, beginning with Samuel Barber’s Dover Beach Op. 3 for baritone and string quartet, a setting of Matthew Arnold’s classic poem. Alexander Scriabin’s chilling Piano Sonata no. 9 “Black Mass” (1913) is followed by Shostakovich’s Second Piano Trio in E minor, Op. 67, composed during World War II, when the first revelations of German extermination camps reached Russia. The second half of the program enjoins us to remember that brotherly love which would be the guarantor of peace. Beethoven’s glorious Op. 127, the first of his late string quartets, was written while the composer was still under the inspiration for his Ninth Symphony (Op. 125).
