2009 HCD Practice-A-Thon Information Now Available!

Download the Information, Practice Log & Sponsor Sheet!

Students of the Hartt Community Division are encouraged to participate in a school-wide practice-a-thon to raise money for the chronically hungry.  Our mission is to strengthen our students’ home and studio practice habits while combating the scourge of hunger in our community.

From Friday, May 1 through Sunday, May 10, students will commit to daily home practice or studio time for dancers.  Each student will find sponsors willing to pledge a small amount of money for each minute practiced. The collective result will demonstrate how the performing arts can truly make a difference for those in our community who are most in need.

Hunger is a significant problem in Greater Hartford - one that affects 100,000 people in our community. Chronic hunger exacerbates many of the social problems in our area, including problem pregnancies, the incidence of premature, high-risk birth, and children too listless or restless to pay attention in school. Teens living with food insecurity are more likely to have health problems, get into trouble, use drugs or alcohol, drop out of school and attempt suicide. Chronically hungry individuals are more prone to drug and alcohol abuse and are more likely to commit crimes in pursuit of food or the means to get food.

Freshplace, a collaborative project of the Chrysalis Center, Foodshare and The Junior League of Hartford, aims to tackle these issues. These organizations are constructing a 2,000 square foot facility in the Upper Albany neighborhood of Hartford to provide fresh fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy products, in addition to other pantry staples, to those in need. Freshplace will offer comprehensive intake and referral services, increasing access to food stamps, health and crisis intervention programs, public assistance, and educational services.  Freshplace will also serve as a community hub and resource, assisting in the revitalization of Upper Albany, supporting the network of existing area food pantries, and creating a center for community involvement.

Here is how to participate:

STEP 1:  Find sponsors (mom, dad, family, friends, neighbors, teachers) before May 1st who will pledge a certain amount for each minute of practice or studio time for dancers. Suggested amounts are pennies, nickels, dimes or quarters. Every penny will make a difference!

STEP 2: Practice or dance daily (minimum 15 minutes) from Friday, May 1st through Sunday, May 10th. Keep track of your practice minutes on the Daily Practice Log.  The more you practice, the more you are helping to feed the hungry.

STEP 3: Calculate the amount of each pledge on your worksheet and collect pledges from all your sponsors throughout the week of May 11. Cash is OK.  Make checks out to the University of Hartford.  Parents may make additional donations beyond the amount pledged if they would like.

STEP 4: Turn in your pledges, along with your daily practice log and worksheet to your private lesson teacher or dance instructor no later than Saturday, May 16th.

STEP 5: Community Division faculty will turn in their studio's Daily Practice Logs and pledge money in a special envelope to one of the Community Division offices no later than May 21st for their students to be eligible for prizes. (Pledge money from individuals will still be accepted after that date.)

Prizes will be awarded to students who have practiced the most minutes and raised the most money for each of the following four age groups:

  • Students age 3-6
  • Students age 7-12
  • Students age 13- 18
  • Adult students

Teachers with the greatest percentage of students participating (minimum studio size10) and the studio with the greatest number of minutes/student (minimum studio size 5) will also receive prizes.

Prizes include a Kiddlywinks gift package, Rock Cats tickets, Hartford Symphony tickets, Biava String Quartet tickets, Borders gift certificates, and restaurant gift certificates (Red Robin, Bertucci’s, etc.).

Please contact the Hartt Community Division at (860) 768-4451 or harttcomm@hartford.edu if you have questions or suggestions.

Thank you for participating in this important event!
