Dear families of Vivace, Aria, and Opus Violin groups, and the Viola Tour Group!

Now that everyone has had a chance to consider the wonderful opportunity that we have been given to travel to Australia in April 2009, we will be having one more follow-up parent meeting on Saturday, December 13 at 3:15 pm in the lobby of Lincoln Theater, just prior to the group class concert.

It is important that we work together as a community to come to consensus about this trip. We want to update you on all the most recent developments regarding the tour arrangements and potentials.

You and your children need to be congratulated on all of the hard work and commitment that has resulted in this very exciting international door being opened to us. It is because of your years of daily practice, weekly lessons, and the enthusiasm you have for your child's education that we have the level of excellence that we have in our program ~ a level that was recently recognized by the International Suzuki Conference Committee in Melbourne, who upon seeing the audition DVD's of our Violin and Viola groups, invited us to be featured in a one-hour concert at the International Conference in April 2009.

The work we do as Suzuki students, parents, and teachers is all about creating beautiful hearts. We live in a world filled with strife, fear, and uncertainty, but we have the power, through our music, to communicate, make connections, and to bring beauty into this very same world! If we risk opening the doors of our hearts to share this beauty, the results can go far beyond our wildest dreams. The Hartt Suzuki Program is excited and honored to have been offered the unique chance to do this on an international level.

Once again, congratulations to all of you who have earned this honor, and we look forward to meeting with you again on Saturday.

Sincerely,

The Suzuki Faculty

The First Steps in Music program is designed to provide a fun, exciting musical experience both in and out of the classroom. Each class begins with 10 to 15 minutes of exploratory play that allows students to informally investigate various sound-making devices. The remainder of the class time is spent in a series of casual music and movement activities and games. December Sight Reading Parties will be held at HAMILTON HEIGHTS

On Friday, December 12th, the Sight Reading party will be hosted by the Atria at Hamilton Heights, Senior Living Facility. (7:30-9pm on both Fridays)

http://www.atriaseniorliving.com/community.aspx?id=1574

The Atria at Hamilton Heights (off Fern Street, a few blocks from Prospect Ave) is close to both the University and the Fern Street UU Church. It is easy to get to, and has plenty of parking.

Please bring a stand (and folding chair if possible) and treats to share if you like. The residents at Hamilton Heights are invited to sight read with us too if they are string players. We will be reading from our usual sight reading books with an emphasis on "seasonal music" in honor of the holiday season.

Members of the Hartt Community Division Adult String Ensemble are encouraged to join the fun as well as members of the Intermezzo, Vivace, Concert Ensemble, OPUS and CYS orchestras.

The Atria at Hamilton Heights is a lovely and elegant place ~ very inviting for music making. We will set up to play in the first floor activities center, just as you enter the front door of the building.

Sight Reading parties at Hamilton Heights will be the same casual, fun, musical events we have come to love at the Hartt School, but now they will also be an opportunity to reach out to the community bringing musical fun to the residents of Hamilton Heights. We will have a wonderful time sight reading music together with friends, young and old.

Avery Ensemble Concert at Trinity Episcopal in Hartford this Friday

avery ensemble

Avery Ensemble will perform this Friday evening, Dec.12 at 7:30 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 120 Sigourney St. in Hartford. This will be the final performance of Uncommon Valor, the first program in its 2008-2009 concert series, All’s Fair in Love and War?!, featuring music by David Wilde, Aaron Jay Kernis and Johannes Brahms.

Subscriptions for the three-program series are $50 per person. Individual tickets are $20 (children’s subscriptions and tickets are half-price). Tickets and subscriptions will be available at the door and reservations can be made by calling (860)523-8931 or by sending an email to info@averyensemble.org. The other two programs in the series, entitled Fools Rush In… and Lest We Forget will be presented at Trinity Episcopal in Hartford on Feb.27 and April 3, at St. James Episcopal Church in New London on Feb.13 & April 17, and at the Capitol Theater in Willimantic on Feb.14 & April 4. The ensemble’s core personnel, Adriana Jarvis—piano & harpsichord, Annie Trépanier—violin, Steve Larson—viola, and Hans Twitchell—cello & bass viol, will be joined by guests in Feb. and April. Please visit www.averyensemble.org for more information about the February and April programs.

This Friday’s performance of Uncommon Valor uses Brahms’ beautiful Piano Quartet in A-major, Op.26 and several other works to weave a musical narrative exploring conflict and heroism. Our desire to honor the courage of those who have exercised bravery in finding alternative responses to violence brought us into contact with two pieces written in response to the Bosnian War (1992—1995). English composer David Wilde’s The Cellist of Sarajevo: A Lament in Rondo Form for Solo Cello, Op. 12, commemorates Vedran Smilovic, former principal cellist of the Sarajevo Opera for his courageous, musical protest of the killing of twenty-two individuals waiting in line for bread during the siege of Sarajevo. The second work is a brilliant and beautiful masterpiece by Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Aaron Jay Kernis: Still Movement with Hymn (1993) for piano quartet.  Written in part out of shock at the events unfolding in Bosnia, the composer also notes that it “at times suggest a Judeo-Christian prayer for the dead, a hymn and Kaddish that also embodies hope for the living.”  Colored with these associations, Brahms’ epic and sublime piano quartet becomes our offering to peaceful heroes.

The Avery Ensemble has been hailed as "an utter delight" by the Hartford Advocate and as "simply outstanding" by Classical Voice of New England. Classical.net calls their playing “gorgeous… almost mad with excitement” with “a wonderful feeling of collaboration…even as their hearts are aflame.”

If you are unable to attend the concert this Friday but would like to purchase advanced tickets for any of the performances of the final two programs of the series, please send a check to Avery Concerts, 143 Maplewood Ave., West Hartford, CT 06119. Checks should be made payable to Avery Concerts. Please include a phone number and/or an email address to receive a confirmation. Tickets will be held at the door unless otherwise requested. For more information about the Avery Ensemble or the series, please email info@averyensemble.org or visit www.averyensemble.org.
