Words from the Director
A Culture of Clean
When I arrived at The Hartt School about eighteen months ago, the Fuller Building had a reputation of being a non-clean zone. From every indication, the reputation was well-deserved. There was a stack of comments and complaints from parents that used words like disgusting and embarrassing to describe the condition of our building. Requests for cleaning services were either ignored or rationalized away. Faculty and staff had become cynical about the prospect for change. It is hard not to be cynical when confronted with 17-inch dust bunnies.
The situation, however, appears to be changing for the better. The University of Hartford has re-organized its cleaning services. New superintendent of buildings Glen Robinson and his team have decided not to accept the status quo. Clear expectations of excellence have been set for each cleaning crew and shift. This change has happily coincided with the renovation of many first floor facilities, including an improved Berkman Auditorium, new rest rooms and hallway carpeting.
As regular users of the Fuller Building, Community Division families have a role to play in creating a new culture of clean. It is now safe to expect that each studio and practice room be vacuumed at least once per week. It is within reason to expect that trash bins be emptied, visible dirt removed and restrooms maintained. When these things do not happen, the users of our building must take notice.
Imagine thousands of eyes and ears attuned to the notion that the Fuller Building should be a clean and comfortable venue. When you see a messy practice room or a carpet in need of cleaning, come and tell us. Community Division receptionists will call the facilities hotline to report the problem. Unlike the past, someone is now likely to respond to this feedback.
If you see a piece of paper on the floor, don’t be afraid to pick it up and place it in the trash bin. Feeling pride in our environment will help us create a considerable culture of clean.

All’s Fair in Love and War?! Concert Series Continues this Friday

Avery Ensemble (Annie Trépanier, Hartt faculty member Steve Larson, Hans Twitchell, & Adriana Jarvis) will perform “Fools Rush In…” this Friday, Feb.27, at 7:30 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church, 120 Sigourney St. in Hartford. An exciting and amusing program including music by Rameau, Strozzi, Farina, Mahler, & Adams, with special guests mezzo-soprano Hai-Ting Chinn and violinist Victoria Ferris. Tickets are $20 ($10 for students and children). For reservations, e-mail info@averyensemble.org or tel.(860)532-8931.
On Friday, February 27 at 7:30 pm Avery Ensemble will appear in the second concert of their series entitled All’s Fair in Love and War?! at Trinity Episcopal Church, 120 Sigourney Street in Hartford, CT. Individual tickets are $20 (student and children’s tickets are half-price). The ensemble’s regular personnel, Adriana Jarvis—harpsichord, Annie Trépanier—violin, Steve Larson—viola, and Hans Twitchell—cello & bass viol, will be joined by special guests mezzo-soprano Hai-Ting Chinn and violinist Victoria Ferris.
Featuring music for harpsichord, baroque violin, bass viol, mezzo-soprano, strings and electronics by Jean-Philippe Rameau, Barbara Strozzi, Carlo Farina, Gustav Mahler and John Adams, this special program entitled Fools Rush In, considers the risks of impulsive commitments to love or aggression in a light, fast-paced and humorous program. The first half features the ensemble in its guise as an early music consort beginning with Rameau’s Quatrieme Concert—a dazzling virtuoso showpiece for Ms. Jarvis at the harpsichord with baroque violin and bass viol accompaniment. A set of truly marvelous love songs by the baroque composer Barbara Strozzi, as well as Mahler’s Rheinlegendchen later in the program, will feature the wonderful mezzo-soprano Hai-Ting Chinn. Carlo Farina’s hilarious and wonderful 1627 Capriccio Stravagante will introduce the fiery guest violinist Victoria Ferris in a work that mocks extravagant caprices of amorous or military nature with onomatopoeic invocations of everything from Il Pifferino della Soldatesca e il tamburo to the peculiar sound made by cats during a certain phase of their hormonal cycle.
John’s Book of Alleged Dances (1994) by America’s most popular living composer of art music, John Adams, is an electronically enhanced romp with which the ensemble celebrates dance’s role in courtship. It is a Saturnalia of syncopation unsurpassed by the best of America’s funk and soul music tradition. The string quartet is accompanied by prerecorded rhythm loops.
The Strad praised the “eloquence of [Avery Ensemble’s] tone and phrasing. . . in every bar.” They have been hailed as "an utter delight" by the Hartford Advocate and as "simply outstanding" by Classical Voice of New England. Classical.net calls their playing “gorgeous… almost mad with excitement” with “a wonderful feeling of collaboration…even as their hearts are aflame.”
Tickets will be available at the door (cash or check). To make reservations, call 860-523-8931 or email info@averyensemble.org.
