Nancy Andersen coaches Fox 61 reporters

The Hartt School’s Nancy Andersen (second from right) coaches Fox 61’s Jennifer Lahmers and Tim Lammers on the basics of healthy singing and performing, as a cameraman records the session.
Fox 61’s Jennifer Lahmers and Tim Lammers performed in a Karaoke contest Friday, Feb. 6 at Butterfly Chinese Restaurant on Farmington Avenue in West Hartford. Their performances will be part of a segment on Karaoke that is scheduled to air on the Hartford television station in late February.
This past Wednesday, Andersen instructed Lahmers and Lammers on the basics of healthy singing and performing to help prepare them for the Karaoke competition.
Lahmers, a Fox 61 reporter, and Lammers, with Fox 61 Sports, spent more than an hour in the newly renovated Berkman Recital Hall with Andersen, who provided helpful tips on warm-ups, posture, breathing, hydration, and other key elements of vocal performance to the self-proclaimed novice singers.
Lahmers and Lammers were good sports throughout the session. The two broadcast journalists-turned-Karaoke-competitors selected each other’s songs for the Karaoke contest in order to “maximize embarrassment” of each other. The songs they selected will remain a surprise to audience members until the competition, and to viewers until the segment airs.

LUZERNE MUSIC CENTER AUDITIONS MARCH 1st

On Sunday, March 1st auditions will be held for the Luzerne Music Center in room 163 at The Hartt School. Auditions will be held from 9am-2pm and from 4pm to 7pm and are open to all orchestral instruments and piano. Contact Melinda Daetsch to set up an audition or to ask about the Luzerne Music Center: mbd716@aol.com or (860)232-6950.
Auditions will be 10 minutes in length and should include scales (as many octaves as is comfortable), a polished piece, and some sight reading.
The Luzerne Music Center is located about one hour north of Albany in the Adirondack National Park. The camp offers instruction for all orchestral instruments, and piano. Because of the camp's close proximity to Saratoga Springs, students attend concerts of the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra weekly at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. Students participate in masterclasses with guest artists and members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The camp offers Junior and Senior Sessions of study:
Junior Session (ages 11-14) June 28 - July 24. Junior session students can opt for a two week session instead of the full four weeks. (June 28-July 12 or July 12 - July 24)
Senior Session (ages 15-18) July 27- August 23.

35TH ANNUAL HSO YOUNG ARTISTS COMPETITION
Hartford Symphony Orchestra Opens Final Round to the Public in Free Concert March 29
The Hartford Symphony Orchestra will present the final round of its 35th Annual Young Artists Competition to the public free of charge Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Millard Auditorium at The Hartt School of the University of Hartford. Encouraging talented young instrumental musicians to continue their musical studies, the statewide instrumental competition is open to Connecticut high school students studying an instrument of the orchestra: brass, woodwind, string, percussion, or piano. During the formal Finals Concert, five to seven finalists will perform a standard concerto movement from memory with accompaniment. The winners will split cash prizes totaling $3,000, and the first-place winner will perform with the HSO in a concert next season. After the competition, members of the audience will be able to attend a free reception to meet the talented players and congratulate the winners.
Last year’s 2008 HSO Young Artist’s Competition winner, pianist Michelle Lee, will perform Chopin’s Grand Polonaise Brilliant with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra at the upcoming POPS! concert featuring Anika Noni Rose Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Mortensen Hall at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts.
Marking its 65th season in 2008-2009, The Hartford Symphony Orchestra is Connecticut’s premier musical organization. The Hartford Symphony is the second largest orchestra in New England and is widely recognized as one of America’s leading regional orchestras. Dedicated to the performance of live symphonic music and the presentation of quality education and community programs, each season the Hartford Symphony plays to audiences numbering approximately 160,000 and reaches thousands statewide through its broadcast concerts on WNPR Connecticut Public Radio. For more information about the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, please visit www.HartfordSymphony.Org.

University of Hartford Women’s Basketball Team’s First Nationally Televised Home Game Sunday, February 15th!
Wear pink to the game to show your support for the fight against breast cancer!
The University’s first nationally televised home basketball game will take place on Sunday, Feb. 15, when the Hartford women take on Marist in a game that will aid in the fight against breast cancer.
The game will take place at 1 p.m. at Chase Arena in the Reich Family Pavilion, and it will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2. Come and help “Pack the Pavilion” for this important game!
Fans are asked to wear pink to the game, which is part of a national "Pink Zone" campaign by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to raise money and awareness for breast cancer prevention and research. Fifty percent of all ticket sales from the game will be donated to the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund. Kay Yow, head women’s basketball coach at North Carolina State University, died last month after a decades-long fight against breast cancer.
Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell, an outspoken breast cancer survivor, is honorary chair for Sunday's game and will be in attendance. In addition, there will be a number of special events and give-aways in conjunction with the "Pink Zone" game:
Two thousand “Pink Zone” T-shirts and 1,000 pink rally towels will be given away to fans at Sunday's game.
There also will be a Banner Contest in which student groups will design "Pink Zone" banners promoting the themes of breast cancer awareness and Hawk spirit. (Dimensions of the banner cannot exceed a queen size bed sheet.). The banners will be displayed during the game in the student section of the Chase Arena, and a $300 cash prize will be awarded to the group that designs the best overall banner.
In addition, SGA will be sponsoring a pre-game pep rally from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hawk's Nest. Stop by for free food, T-shirts, face painting, and live music in preparation for the big game!
Game day tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for youth. The game is free for University of Hartford students.
For tickets and information, please contact the University of Hartford Malcolm and Brenda Berman Athletics Ticket Office at 860-768-HAWK (4295), or visit www.hartfordhawks.com.
