In addition to the scholarship competitions, financial support is allocated to statewide community music organizations.  Membership is open to performers or to those who simply enjoy classical music, providing a network for musicians.  Concerts and lectures are usually held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2080 Boulevard in West Hartford on selected Thursday mornings at 10:00 am.  All concerts are open to the public and free to members.  Admission for non-members is generally $5.00.  For more information, go to www.musical-club-of-hartford.org

An update from yet more of our Horn Studio Graduates
They are everywhere, and we are proud of all their accomplishments.

Andrew Dalton will be graduating college in June, and then will be returning to Connecticut to work as an actuary at The Hartford. He misses music a lot, and actually played a fair amount of horn over winter break (his sisters were thrilled).

Jeff DesRosier is a graduate student at Hartt, majoring in Horn Performance.  He completed his Music Education degree here last year, and is now studying horn with Peter Reit.  He has been performing with his horn quartet at many local schools.

Sarah Fitch works for Rayburn Music in West Hartford, and is the proud mother of a 3 ½ year-old.  Thanks in part to the encouragement of current horn student, Rich O’Neill, she has started performing on horn again, and played for Christmas services last month.

Elaine Gunn spent 2 years at University of Massachusetts Amherst as a language major, and has now transferred to the Education program at CCSU.  She continues her horn playing; she took lessons and played at UMass, and has just completed lessons with me again at CCSU, where she performs with the Wind Ensemble.  She hopes to graduate next year.

Kristy Harrington graduated college with a major in psychology, and decided to go into the nursing profession. She lives in CT and continues to play her horn.

Meredith Hickey-Schiappa Klepper is in Baltimore, and is expecting her first child soon.  She graduated from Peabody with a degree in horn performance, and then decided to get her Master’s in Nursing.

Brendan Swiniarski is a sophomore vocal music education student at Hartt.

Alicia Wells is a senior at Skidmore.  While she is not a Music major there, she performs full-time with the Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and in several chamber music groups.  She has taken horn lessons while at college and she presented a Senior Recital last month.

Karla Wurzel is a senior at Conn. College.  Karla plays with the band, the orchestra, in individual student recitals, and last year she even played with the jazz band one time!  She is studying horn with Heather Doughty.

Rebecca Flannery to teach and tour in Japan while on sabbatical for the Spring 2009 Semester

Rebecca Flannery, professional harpist and harp professor at The Hartt School, University of Hartford, Connecticut, has been invited to establish a harp department and teach the first semester harp class at the Japan Lutheran College (JLC) in Mitaka, a suburb of Tokyo, Japan.  Flannery has accepted this invitation and will teach there for the Spring Semester 2009 (April through July, 2009). In conjunction with this, she has accepted the invitation to perform a solo recital at both the Opening Ceremony of the College school year as well as a solo recital in Centennial Celebration of the establishment of JLC.

Ms. Flannery has also accepted invitations for a master class and recital in Tokyo during the month of March 2009, and an 8-concert tour including cities on both the main island of Honshu, where Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are venues, as well as the southern island of Kyushu, where Nagasaki is located. She has been invited to return to Yonezawa, Japan, where she gave a recital and master class two years ago. Her performance in Yonezawa in 2007 sparked enough interest that 12 new harpists are awaiting her return to work with her.

Flannery, a well-known concert harpist has performed with most CT Orchestras, and has toured extensively in the US, as well as in Europe, especially with her chamber group of harp, flute, viola and voice.  Most recently she performed a new chamber work presented in a faculty concert at the Hartt School, University of Hartford, written by Michael Colgrass, Pan Trio for 2 percussion and harp.

While on sabbatical from The Hartt School and Neighborhood Music School in New Haven, CT she will also be working on a pet project composing music for harp influenced by traditional music of Japan and Japanese culture.  Flannery has already composed several volumes of harp music for lever and pedal harp, including pieces for flute and harp.

Flannery will be traveling to Japan with her husband, Peter Reis, managing partner of Harps International which buys, sells, and rents pedal and lever harps. Harps International maintains showrooms across the US and in Tokyo, and supports various harp therapy groups (groups who perform for patients in hospitals and hospices). Reis will be managing the company from offices in Japan.

Bassists Needed!

upright bass

It’s a fact: String Bass players have more fun; especially the members of the Hartt Suzuki Bass program!  Why?  Well, we’ll admit to being biased, but the String Bass has the most beautiful, warm and resonant tone of all the string instruments, and provides depth and structure to any ensemble in which it is played.  Did you know that the String Bass is the most versatile member of the string family?  Together with its modern cousin, the Bass Guitar, (which is tuned and fingered the same way), it is at home in orchestras, jazz bands, rock bands, swing bands and more.  It’s one of the few instruments used in virtually all styles of music.

We need more bassists to play in our orchestras and ensembles in the Hartt Community Division!  Bassists study with Susan Powell, who, in addition to having a Master’s degree from Julliard, has 35 years experience teaching students of all levels.  Ms. Powell also directs the Hartt Suzuki Bass ensembles.  Like violins and cellos, string basses are available in smaller sizes for younger students.   So, come join us and learn how to make joyous music on the most beautiful sounding member of the string instrument family -- the String Bass!

Immediate Openings for new Cello Students with David Gibson!
Accepting students from young beginners to advanced students!

We are happy to announce that David Gibson is available to teach private cello students (from young beginners to adult students) through the Hartt Community Division.

David Gibson received his B.S. from The Juilliard School and his M.M. from Yale University; both degrees are in cello performance.  His primary teachers included Luigi Silva, Dorothy DeLay, and Claus Adam in cello;
Jacob Druckman in composition; Robert Mann in Chamber Music; and Jorge Mester in conducting. He served on the faculty of SUNY Albany from 1972-1979 and has been a professor of music in the Electronic Arts Department and conductor of the RPI Orchestra at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 1994.  He has also been an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, Mount Holyoke College, Bennington College, Meadowmount School, the Mannes College Preparatory Division, and the Hartt School Community Division.  He has had a large private cello teaching studio for more than thirty years and has placed students in every major conservatory in the country during that time.  Many of his students have become professional cellists and have participated successfully in national and international competitions, such as Clancy Newman who won the Naumberg International Competition in 2001.

HSO Family Matinee Shows Kids and Adults How to Dance, Sing and Play with Classical Music
Interactive Program to Feature Movie Soundtracks and Orchestral Classics

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra will show kids (and “kids at heart”) how to “Sing, Dance, Play!” with classical music at the second of this season’s Family Matinee concerts Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 3:00 pm at The Belding Theater in The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. Led by Family Matinee conductor Marc Kaplan, this interactive program will feature movie music and orchestral classics, including selections from Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “The Little Mermaid,” Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, and Shostakovich’s Festive Overture.  As a bonus, audiences will get to hear a world premiere by local composer Greg Kallor and performances by youthful vocal soloists Suzanne Lis (soprano) and Alita Moses.

Suzanne Lis, is the daughter of HCD faculty members Jarek and Malgosia Lis (violin & suzuki piano).  Suzanne is a long-time Community Division student, and currently studies violin with Teri Einfeldt.

Sing, Dance, Play!” was specifically designed to reach families; there is something for everyone,” says Family Matinee conductor Marc Kaplan.  “This repertoire will have people moving in their seats and wanting more!  The music is incredibly diverse, spanning all periods from classical to the modern day.  There will be music sung and played from movies, classical music which has inspired dance for today's music, and a world premiere of a new composition by Greg Kallor, who has been my best friend since we were in Kindergarten.  What is also very special about this concert is that all of the soloists are very talented young musicians who have been students of mine.  I think that every young musician in the audience will be inspired by seeing youth thriving on a professional stage.”

Described as “energetic and stylish” by Jon Lender and “a ball of fire” by Hartford Symphony Music Director Edward Cumming, West Hartford native Marc Kaplan is recognized as one of the finest music educators in America.  In 2002, Marc became a faculty member at King Philip Middle School and Hall High School, where he received national recognition for his innovative educational programs.  Kaplan will lead the Hartford Symphony Orchestra for both the 2008-2009 Family Matinee Series and the 2008-2009 Discovery Series, as well as the “Symphony In The Schools” Chamber Concerts.

Ticket Prices: $12, $14, $18, $20 for adults; $10 for children

Tickets can be purchased in person Monday through Friday between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm at Hartford Symphony Orchestra Ticket Services, 99 Pratt Street, Suite 500 in Hartford, by calling (860) 244-2999, or online at www.hartfordsymphony.org

HCD Email Newsletter Quiz

This week’s question:     One of these instruments is NOT played by blowing through a round hole:

a)         flute
b)        clarinet
c)         piccolo

Last week’s question:    The Toy Symphony, in which a tin horn, a bird whistle, and other children’s toys appear, is by:

a)         Bizet
b)         Ravel
c)         Pierne
d)         Haydn

Correct Answer:          d)         Haydn   *  This may not be the actual composer.

Quiz Winner:            Bob Dusza, father of Bobby (Tuba, in GHYWE)

Excerpt from Mr. Dusza’s email: “Here is an article suggesting the actual individual who composed the piece:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Toy Symphony (full title: Cassation in G for Orchestra and Toys) is a musical work with parts for toy instruments and is popularly played at Christmas.  It was long reputed to be the work of Joseph Haydn, but later scholarship suggested that it was actually written by Leopold Mozart. Its authorship is still disputed, however, and other composers have been proposed as the symphony's true author. Recent research on a newly found manuscript suggests the Austrian benedictine monk Edmund Angerer (1740–1794) to be the author, but these findings are disputed among scholars.”

This week’s prize:     2 tickets to the Hartt Symphony Orchestra concert on Friday, February 20, 2009 at 7:30 pm in Lincoln Theater.

To submit your answers, send your reply to jburnham@hartford.edu with the subject “Quiz Answer”.  Answers must be received before 12 noon on the Tuesday after the Newsletter is sent.  If more than one person answers correctly, the winner will be chosen randomly, using the tried-and-true “pick a name out of a hat” method.  Please also note your connection to the Hartt Community Division (teacher/program) when you submit your answer.
