News from the HCD Dance Department

Spring Festival

Well everyone, our school year is almost at a close with the culmination of the Spring Festival.  This year’s Spring Festival will be held at the Hoffman Auditorium at St. Joseph’s College, West Hartford as our very own Millard auditorium is getting it’s much needed new roof.  Tickets for the Saturday shows are almost sold out.  If you need tickets please call the University’s Lincoln Theater Box Office at (860) 768-4228.  We would also like to remind parents of children performing in the Saturday show that you can get one free ticket to either the Friday 7pm  evening show or the Sunday 3pm for your child. Please mention this to the box office staff at time of purchase.

There is no need for you to hear your children say the words ‘I’m bored’ during the summer.   The Dance Department has many programs to offer with classes and workshops for all ages, even you.  Here is a brief summary of many of the programs but there is more information on our website www.hcd.hartford.edu click on Summer Dance for all the dance programs and Summer Music for music programs

For young children 3-5 we have two Music & Movement Workshops lined up.  These workshops are a great way to stimulate children’s creativity and imagination using music, stories and songs.

The Children’s Ballet Workshop returns again this year and is a very popular half-day workshop.  There are two Children’s Ballet Workshops scheduled during the summer for children ages, 3-5 & 5-8.

For the serious young dancer ages 8yrs – 14yrs we have a full day program called the Youth Ballet & Dance Intensive, which begins every morning with a ballet technique class, followed by a pointe class for those students already on pointe or a prep for pointe class for those who are not on pointe yet.   The rest of the day will vary day by day, but examples of classes the students will take are: tap, jazz, modern, improvisation, dance appreciation, dance composition and creative studies. Save $75 dollars by signing up for both weeks before July 7th.

For children age 10 an up & adults we have a terrific program of classes running for 6 weeks in the evenings beginning July 7th.

Love Broadway?  Well, the Dancing on Broadway Summer Workshop returns for 2 full weeks jam packed with classes focused on the musical theater aspect of dance.

The First International Summer Ballet Academy will be running at the new performing arts center in Hartford.  This Intensive program is for the serious ballet student and is by acceptance into the program only by audition.  Please contact 768-6000 to arrange a placement class.

More detailed information on these summer dance programs are on our website at: www.hcd.hartford.edu click on summer dance

About the Competition
Now in its 31st year, the purpose of the Competition for Young Pianists is to nurture the growth and development of student musicians, to reward them for excellence in classical repertoire and to encourage them to acquaint themselves with and perform contemporary music. To qualify for the Competition, students must live or study in Connecticut. A special feature is that through the Renée B. Fisher Composer Awards, two composers each year are chosen internationally to create new works for performance at the competition. The Competition is held at the Neighborhood Music School in New Haven.  For more information visit their website at: http://www.nmsmusicschool.org/Fisher/index.html
