Ballet Rocks the Summer Scene at Hartt with the International Summer Ballet Academy Summer Celebration Performance!

Our Fall Schedules are almost ready and we are aiming to have them up on our website July 1st.   Our Fall classes will begin Tuesday, September 8th.

Check out all of the Summer Programs offered through the Hartt Community Division!

For young children 3-5 we have two Music & Movement Workshops lined up.  These workshops are a great way to stimulate children’s creativity and imagination using music, stories and songs.

The Children’s Ballet Workshop returns again this year and is a very popular half-day workshop.  There are two Children’s Ballet Workshops scheduled during the summer for children ages, 3-5 & 5-8.

For the serious young dancer ages 8yrs – 14yrs we have a full day program called the Youth Ballet & Dance Intensive, which begins every morning with a ballet technique class, followed by a pointe class for those students already on pointe or a prep for pointe class for those who are not on pointe yet.   The rest of the day will vary day by day, but examples of classes the students will take are: tap, jazz, modern, improvisation, dance appreciation, dance composition and creative studies. Save $75 dollars by signing up for both weeks before July 7th.

For children age 10 an up & adults we have a terrific program of classes running for 6 weeks in the evenings beginning July 7th.

Love Broadway?  Well, the Dancing on Broadway Summer Workshop returns for 2 full weeks jam packed with classes focused on the musical theater aspect of dance.

The First International Summer Ballet Academy will be running at the new performing arts center in Hartford.  This Intensive program is for the serious ballet student and is by acceptance into the program only by audition.  Please contact 768-6000 to arrange a placement class.

Clarinet, French Horn & Trumpet Institutes!

The popular Horn, Clarinet & Trumpet Institutes return this year with an expanded full-day option, and additional instruments offered as part of the Middle School Music Camp & High School Music Camp! 

Middle School Music Camp
August 17-21, 2009
8:30am-5:30pm
$295 (full-day)

Now offering a fully-comprehensive music program that combines the performing arts with summer fun!  Open to students with at least 2 years of experience on their instrument or voice, including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, piano and voice.  Students will enjoy the intensity of direct study on their primary instrument along with the fun and enjoyment that comes from broadened musical exposure.  Other classes include music theory, song-writing, sight-singing, ear-training, plus chorus and instrumental ensembles depending upon your speciality.
Thanks to the success of our past programs, we are expanding summer programs for high school instrumental music students.  For those who are returning to Hartt this summer, don't worry; the programs of the past are still thriving and bringing you the excellence and enjoyment you've come to know:

  • Middle School Clarinet Institute with ALAN FRANCIS
    • Middle School Horn Institute with SUE SPAULDING
      • Middle School Trumpet Institute with PETE ROE

Each morning, participants will meet with other students of the same instrument or voice for instruction specific to that instrument.  Professional faculty will gear activities for this age group and will include curricular content as follows:

  • Basic Technique: tone, breathing, range, pitch accuracy, intonation, articulations, dynamic range, scales, fingerings, bowings, hand & body positioning, embouchure, etc.
  • Reading Skills: rhythm patterns, note accuracy, key signatures, sight-reading, visual to sound connections and lots of practice
  • Solo Playing: coaching on solo preparation, mock auditions, audition techniques, tone and sound production specific to solo playing
  • Ensemble Playing:  independent part playing in two to four part ensemble music focusing on an introduction to small ensemble playing skills and musical independence

For the afternoon, students will participate in activities with all other participants, including singing, music theory, song-writing, ensembles including instrumental and choral options, activities, etc.

High School Music Camp

July 27-31, 2009

High school aged musicians will enjoy intensive study on their instrument for half a day, with general performing arts exposure during the remainder of each day.  Instrument-specific workshops include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet & horn; additional classes offered in movement, improvisation, music theory, music history, chorus and optimizing the body for instrumental performance.  Half-day options are available. 
Thanks to the success of our past programs, we are expanding summer programs for high school instrumental music students.  For those who are returning to Hartt this summer, don't worry; the programs of the past are still thriving and bringing you the excellence and enjoyment you've come to know:

  • High School Clarinet Institute with Alan Francis

Now also offering Flute & Saxophone Institutes, as well!

Instrument-specific classes will take place for approximately half the day and are split into intermediate and advanced sections to better target activities, repertoire and technical exercises according to ability pending adequate enrollment. Areas of study may include warm-up routines, fundamentals, intonation, range and endurance, varieties of literature, ensemble and solo playing, mock auditions, balance and blend, instrument accessories and equipment, basic improvisation, vibrato, tone, proper sound production, and much, much more.

Lunch and general classes will involve all students across many instrument types.  All students will participate in a one-hour class discussing music theory, music history and ear-training which will incorporate Kodaly sight-singing techniques.  The remaining two class periods will allow students to choose between a number of options designed to be fun, summer-focused, provide new artistic experiences, broaden your understanding in the arts, awesome and memorable for all involved!

Hartt Middle School Band Institute 2009


A week-long workshop for middle school brass, woodwind and percussion students entering grades 7-9 in Fall 2009.

About the Program
August 10-14, 2009
The Hartt Middle School Band Institute (HMSBI) is a week-long workshop for middle school brass, woodwind and percussion students. The program includes daily rehearsals in both the Concert Band and smaller ensembles, sectional rehearsals, and music classes.
The music classes cover  musicianship, ear training, improvisation or rhythm, drumming and movement.   Also scheduled are several faculty recital performances and assemblies for the students to attend. The week will culminate with a final concert on Friday afternoon followed by a reception for the students and their guests.

Eligibility
Students who are entering grades 7 - 9 in Fall 2009 are eligible to participate in HMSBI. Students should have played their instrument for two years and/or be able to play Major Scales up to two sharps and three flats, plus perform music at a middle school level.

Students entering grade 6 may be eligible with permission from the director. If unsure of ability, please contact the director, Susan Spaulding, for a consultation.
Daily Schedule
Each day begins with all students arriving at The Hartt School at 8:50am.  The first activity of the day is a full concert band rehearsal.  The morning and afternoon will be scheduled with faculty performances, sectional rehearsals, classes and small ensemble rehearsals.  An ample lunch break is provided and students should  bring a bag lunch and beverage each day.  The day will close with another full concert band rehearsal.  Students should be picked up at 5pm.
Performance Information
The week will close with a final concert involving all Hartt Middle School Band Institute participants.  The concert will begin at 3pm on Friday, August 14th.  The concert is free and all parents, family members and friends are encouraged to attend.  A reception for students and their guests will follow the concert.
No audition is necessary for the HMSBI but please note that a signature of a music instructor (private lesson teacher or band director) is required on the enclosed registration form.

Performing Arts Primer

What are your children doing this summer?  Day camp with sports, games and swimming?   Would you like some variety?  Something new for them to try?  Come to Hartt for a week and they will enjoy an introduction to 3 of the performing arts:  music, dance & theater!

Especially designed for elementary-aged students, grades 1-5!

Participants will take classes in dance/movement, theater, choir, piano & recorder.  Students in grades 3-5 will also learn to make a sound on wind & string instruments so they will be more equipped to choose an instrument to play as they grow older.

Are you looking for something different for your child to do this summer? 
Spend a week with us at Hartt!!

Offered for grades 2-7, this program builds musical skill while offering flexibility to try out other art forms.  Open to instrumental students with at least one year of experience on their instrument; singers are welcome without any past experience.  In addition to study on your instrument or voice, students will participate in theater, choral and dance/movement classes.  Strings, brass, woodwinds, guitar, piano & voice are welcome!

Summer Classes for Adults


In addition to numerous dance classes, the Hartt Community Division offers summer music classes for adults in a relaxed and open atmosphere for any skill level.

Tuesdays (July 7-August 25, 2009)
5:30-6:30pm    Chorus for Adults
6:30-7:15pm    Social time & fun
7:15-8:15pm    Strings, Woodwinds & Brass Classes for Adults
Classes will be offered for 8 consecutive weeks this summer, however registration is offered for only 6 weeks.  This gives adults the flexibility to attend the 6 classes that best fits their schedule leaving time for summer vacations and scheduling flexibility.

Fee: $40 (6 classes)

Minimum enrollment: 10 students per class

Sign up for chorus, string class, or woodwind and brass class.  Take advantage of the social time offered in between the chorus and instrumental classes.  We'll offer more details to come that we hope will entice you to share the extra 45 minutes of social time and make new friends while you enjoy your music-making.  You may also sign up for both chorus and an instrumental group if desired.

International Summer Ballet Academy

The I nternational Summer Ballet Academy (ISBA) is a premiere summer ballet school for advanced and intermediate students ages 13-21. Housed at the beautiful new Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center on the University of Hartford campus, the ISBA offers a rigorous and nurturing dance experience for pre-professional students. The world renowned faculty includes Haiyan Wu (USA International Ballet Competition Gold medalist, 2002), Kurt Douglas (Limón Dance Company) and Miguel Campaneria, chair of The Hartt School Community Division Dance Department.

Video Audition Requirements: Video (10 minutes maximum) should include work at the barre (one side only) plié, tendu, adagio, and grand battement; in the center (one side) consisting of an adagio, pirouettes, petit allegro and grand allegro. Women: please include pointe work combinations in center containing relevé, échappé, and piqué turns. Men: please include two turning combinations, a combination with tours en l’air, and petite allegro with beats. A short classical variation for men and women is optional.

Include a photograph showing first arabesque in center (on pointe or demi-pointe), and one letter of recommendation from a present dance teacher. Photos will not be returned.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Hartt Suzuki Institute is designed to offer music students, families, and teachers the opportunity for concentrated study of repertory, philosophy, and methods introduced by the respected Japanese educator Shinichi Suzuki. The institute provides
private and group experiences taught by some of the best Suzuki teachers from around the country.

The Hartt Suzuki Institute, if used as a supplement to regular lessons, can offer the student, parent, or teacher the perfect time to focus on pre-learned repertory and to concentrate on polishing and expanding techniques. The 2009 Hartt Suzuki Student Institute is designed for violin, viola, cello, guitar, and piano students. Students
must be currently studying with a Suzuki-trained teacher.

Each student will receive a minimum of 4 hours per day of formal instruction. Student in Books 4 and above will receive 5 hours per day of formal instruction. Instruction includes a master class in which each child will receive individual instruction, a repertory class, an ensemble or movement class, and at least one additional class appropriate to the instrument and level of the child. Additional classes will be assigned by the institute
according to student instrument and level. In addition, students are expected to practice a minimum of one hour per day.

NEW! Student Check-in begins Sunday, August 2, 2009 at 12 p.m.
Final Concerts Friday, August 7th.



STUDENT CLASSES

Book 1
Each student will receive a minimum of four hours per day of formal instruction. Instruction includes a master class in which each child will receive individual instruction with four students per masterclass, a repertory class, chorus, and Keep the Pulse (a movement and rhythm class).

Book 2 – 3
Each student will receive a minimum of four hours per day of formal instruction. Instruction includes a master class in which each child will receive individual instruction with four students per masterclass, a repertory class, chorus, and an ensemble.

Book 4 – 6
Each student will receive a minimum of five hours per day of formal instruction. Instruction includes a master class in which each child will receive individual instruction with three students per masterclass, a repertory class, an ensemble, and two additional classes that will be assigned according to the student level and instrument.

Book 7 and up
Each student will receive five hours per day of formal instruction. Instruction includes a master class in which each child will receive individual instruction with two students per masterclass, repertory class, an ensemble, and two additional classes that will be assigned according to the student level and instrument. As always, parent support through attendance is expected at the masterclass.

 

Teacher Training Workshop Courses

Violin & Guitar Book 1: This course will include 28 hours of class plus 15 hours of observations over 8 days. Workshop participants must have completed ECC! in order to enroll in this course.

Violin Book 3 or 6: These courses will include 15 hours of class plus 8 hours of observations over 5 days. Workshop participants must have completed and registered ECC, Book 1, and Book 2 in order to enroll these courses.

NEW!!! Suzuki Early Childhood Education with Dorothy Jones.
This summer we will be offering Suzuki Early Childhood Education (ECE) for the first time at the Hartt Teacher Institute. Dorothy Jones will be teaching Stage One: Prenatal and Baby Years. This course emphasizes the development of a child from birth through age three. This course introduces:
The importance of the Suzuki approach to early education
• The prenatal and postnatal learning environment
• The baby class curriculum and goals
• The equipment used in class
• The team teaching approach
• The sequence of the baby class curriculum
• Teaching strategies
• A brief introduction to prenatal music stimulation

Music and Movement Workshops
A 5 day workshop for children ages 3 through 5 years old.

The Music and Movement Workshop is a won­derful collaboration between our First Steps in Music Program and our Dance Department. The workshop enables young children the opportunity to explore and experience both dance and music all in the same day! Imagine a morning filled with musical expression, self-expression, creative movement, artistry, technique, discipline and free play with percus­sion instruments to organized songs, rhymes!

This program aims to:
• Inspire children to listen, feel and move to music of all kinds
• Stimulate a child’s imagination through songs, movement, and creating stories to music
• Show that stretching, bending, reaching and jumping to the beat is exhilarating
• Teach the child that a body can create beautiful shapes and lines

A daily craft or activity and a snack will be provided.

Summer Youth Dance Intensive

For the serious dancer ages 8 through 14 looking to bring
a new range of versatility into their technique and dancing.

The program is designed to train the young dancer and provide a foundation in solid ballet technique as well as educate the student on a wide variety of dance forms and related skills necessary to make a well rounded artist. The course offering will include Ballet, Pointe, Pre-pointe, modern, jazz, tap, dance appreciation, improvisation and creative studies, and dance composition.

It’s challenging and great fun and it provides the basis for all of dance. In our ballet program, children learn so much of great value:

• That stories can be told by moving to music
• That stretching, bending, reaching and jumping to the beat is exhilarating

About the Program
Dance has always played an integral part in the history of stage and screen musicals. Now more than ever, dance is the main focus for many major hits on Broadway. This sum­mer intensive is designed for the serious student to develop their technique, versatility, and performance skills in dance while educating the student in the discipline, history, challenges, and artistry needed to be successful and well rounded for the musical theatre stage. Students will also spend time learning choreography in the style of some of Broadway’s leading choreographers to be performed at the end of each week. This workshop is appropriate for dancers with an interest in musical theatre and/or students with seri­ous aspirations to Dance on Broadway!

Placement
There will be required placement classes scheduled ap­proximately 1 – 2 weeks prior to the start of the workshop. Accomodations can be made if you cannot make the dates scheduled.

Full Force Dance Theatre’s two weekSummer Intensive offers quality faculty, diversity in training, individual attention and a unique and intense experience in modern dance. It is valuable training for the Professionally bound dancer as well as a refreshing change of pace for the returning professional or teacher. Because of the rigorous nature of the program all dancers should be currently training and have a strong foundation in ballet and/or modern technique. Minimum age requirement is 16 years of age. 

Course Descriptions and Schedule

Body Conditioning (9:30-10:45)
Start your day off with a course that will utilize elements of Yoga, Pilates and stretching exercises. Classes will focus on core strengthening, use of breath and lengthening of muscles in preparation for technique classes. Mats recommended.

Advanced Modern Technique (11-12:30)
This course will increase your range and articulation as a technician and performer by deepening skills that are applicable to all modern dance styles currently being performed. Lyricism, brio, release, density, expressionism, and wit are a few of the movement qualities we will investigate.

Improvisation (1:15-2:45)
This course will turn you into the versatile, gutsy performer of your dreams. In our quest to become more ourselves we will investigate techniques from Ruth Zaporah's Action Theater™ work, Viola Spolin's improvisational "games," Mary Starks Whitehouse's Authentic Movement, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen's Body-Mind Centering®, layered improvisational prompts created by the instructor and variations suggested
by the class.

Repertory Workshop (2:45-4:15)
Students will work first-hand with FFDT Artistic Director Katie Stevinson-Nollet, rehearsing and performing company repertory from recent work. Students will develop artistry and performance skills.

Int./Adv. Modern Technique (4:30-6)
A dynamic Contemporary Modern class focusing on dancing with your whole self; heart, mind and body. We will explore movement and articulation of the spine, and use gravity and opposition to move into choreography with a sense of freedom.

There will be a in studio student, company and faculty performance Friday, July 17th at 3:30pm to conclude the
two-week intensive. Free and open to the public.

Recital at the New Britain Museum
of American Art

Attend the Faculty and Student recital at the New Britain Museum of American Art on Sunday, July 12th at 3:00 p.m.  The recital will feature music by American composers performed by Nancy Andersen,  Chair of the Hartt Community Division with Dr. Mark George, Director of the Hartt Community Division and Natasha Ulyanovsky, pianist and Hartt Community Division Vocal Students Noelle Currie, Chelsea Kane, Tessa Romano, Krystal Sobaskie and Ta'Niker Slater, accompanied by Stephen Scarlato, piano and David Gibson, cello. The concert is free with admission to the museum:  Adults $9. Students $7. Children under 12 are free.
