Well everyone, our school year is almost coming to a close with the culmination of the Spring Festival. But, before you read on for the latest updates with the Festival, I wanted to remind everyone of the great summer programs we have lined up. More detailed information on the summer dance programs mentioned below are on our website at: www.hcd.hartford.edu; click on summer dance.
For young children 3-5 we have two music & movement workshops lined up. These workshops are a great way to stimulate children’s creativity and imagination using music, stories and songs.
The Children’s Ballet workshop returns again this year and is a very popular workshop. There are two Children’s Ballet Workshops scheduled during the summer for ages 3-5 & 5-8
For the serious young dancer we have a full day program called the Youth Dance Intensive, which begins every morning with a ballet technique class, followed by a pointe class for those students already on pointe or a prep for pointe class for those who are not on point yet. The rest of the day will vary, but examples of classes are: tap, jazz, modern, improvisation, dance appreciation, dance composition and creative studies.
If you are an adult or a young person 14years and up we have a terrific program of classes running for 6 weeks in the evenings beginning July 7th.
Love Broadway? Well, the Dancing on Broadway summer workshop returns for 2 full weeks jam packed with classes focused on the musical theater aspect of dance.
The first International Ballet Academy will be running at the new performing arts center in Hartford. This Intensive program is for the serious ballet student and acceptance into the program is by audition. Please contact 768-6000 to arrange a placement class.
More detailed information on these summer dance programs are on our website at: www.hcd.hartford.edu - click on summer dance!
Spring Festival
Production Week for our Annual Spring Festival is next week, June 7th – 14th.
We are still looking for parent volunteers to help backstage with the children.
With over 100 children performing between the Saturday shows, for example, it is crucial that parents step up to volunteer. If your child is actually performing and you want to watch the show then you cannot chaperone that show as this would leave too many children unattended with too few helpers backstage. Please volunteer for a day/time when your child is not performing. Please don’t leave it to someone else. Contact dancedesk@hartford.edu and let our receptionist know when you are able to help.
Just as a reminder - a copy of the Theatre Procedures Handbook for Children’s Dance and Intensive Division Students are on our website in the virtual Dance Bag at http://www.hcd.hartford.edu/dance/dance_bag.htm

Horn Quartet

Brass Quartet
North Haven, CT – The Horn Quartet and Brass Quartet from The Hartt School Community Division, University of Hartford, will give a free concert at 7:30pm on Friday, June 5, 2009 at St. John’s Church, 3 Trumbull Place. This concert will immediately follow the regularly scheduled Community Supper that runs from 6 – 7pm every Friday, and it will feature music by Palestrina, Ramsoe, and Franz Strauss.
Both quartets are comprised of eight talented high school musicians from all over Connecticut, representing six different high schools. Selected by audition, the students are coached by Susan Spaulding. Ms. Spaulding is the principal horn for the Greater Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra and New Britain Symphony Orchestra. She is also assistant principal horn for the New Haven and Hartford Symphony Orchestras. Ms. Spaulding has been a Hartt Community Division faculty member since 1995 and on the Hartt College faculty since 2007. She is the Director of the Hartt Middle School Band Institute and Hartt Summer Horn Institute as well as a faculty member of Central Connecticut State University.
“We hope many people will come for the supper and stay for the concert,” said The Rev. Matt Lincoln, Rector of St. John’s. “We’re going to encourage our supper regulars to stay and enjoy the music as well.”
Community Suppers are offered each Friday for a suggested donation of $1 per person, with a family cap of $5. No one is turned away in the event they are unable to make a donation.
“Offering a free musical event after the suppers is something we want to be able to do as often as possible in the future,” said Lincoln. “It’s just one more opportunity for St. John’s to serve the community.” He added that last winter when St. John’s hosted the Trinity Boys Choir following a Community Supper the church was filled to maximum capacity.
St. John's Church is situated at the top of the Green in North Haven, where our doors are open for prayer and peace. For more information about this and other St. John’s events, please call the parish office at (203) 239-0156 or visit us at www.stjohns-northhaven.org.
