Leonid Sigal and Margreet Francis Fill Wadsworth’s Halls with International Selections
Under the artistic direction of HSO Concertmaster Leonid Sigal, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s Sunday Serenades Series will close out its season on Sunday, May 3, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Wadsworth Atheneum with a program based on the Wadsworth’s exhibit of international clothing inspired by the costume designs of the Ballets Russes. Mr. Sigal will team up with Hartford Symphony pianist Margreet Francis to bring these colorful costumes to life with four enchanting works for piano and violin: Strauss’ Violin Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 18; Prokofiev’s Five Melodies for Violin and Piano, Op. 35; Chausson’s Poème for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 25; and De Falla’s Suite Populaire Espagnole for Violin and Piano.
“Our collaboration with The Wadsworth Atheneum provides a unique opportunity to hear chamber music in a wonderful space filled with artworks that have interesting ties to the works being performed,” says Hartford Symphony Executive Director Kristen Phillips. “It’s a new way for our audience to hear and interact with HSO musicians on a more personal level.”
Hartford Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster and Chamber Music at the Wadsworth Atheneum Series Artistic Director Leonid Sigal has enjoyed a multi-faceted career as recitalist, chamber musician, and orchestra leader. Born in Moscow, Mr. Sigal’s experience includes recital and chamber music appearances in the United States, Canada, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Russia, Japan and South Korea and collaborations with Mstislav Rostropovich, Evgeny Kissin, Edgar Meyer and Joseph Silverstein, among others. Mr. Sigal has served as Artistic Director of the Miami Chamber Symphony and is currently concertmaster and assistant conductor of the Atlantic Chamber Orchestra.
 |
Margreet Francis is a member of the Hartford Symphony where she plays piano, harpsichord, and celesta.
Her performances have been recorded for the Centaur label and regularly broadcast over radio and T.V.
Ms. Francis performs on a regular basis with members of the Miami String Quartet and the Hartford Symphony.
She also spent several years playing piano with the New World Chamber Ensemble, Chamber Music Plus, the Soni Fidelis Woodwind Quintet and Trio ARIOSO.
Ms. Francis is also the Hartt Community Division's Piano Department Chairperson. |
All Chamber Music at the Wadsworth Atheneum programs are on Sunday afternoons at 2:00 pm at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford. Abundant free street parking is available on Sundays immediately outside the Atheneum. Atheneum members receive a $10 discount on single tickets. Sunday Brunch at The Russell Café in the Atheneum is available for all ticket holders; call The Russell at (860)838-4042 for hours and pricing information.

Announcing a new chamber music festival that will take place in Thailand directed by John Lindsey and his wife, Nok. John has participated in many overseas chamber music festivals and has seen first hand what works and what does not work, and is using this experience and knowledge in putting together a well- organized and unique festival. Nok is a native of Thailand, so she has personal connections and an intimate relationship with this country.
The festival takes place from December 26, 2009 - January 9, 2010. It is for violin, viola, and cello students between the ages of 17 and 25, who will play in string quartets. They will be coached by John Lindsey
(performer and professor of violin at Crane (Potsdam)), Jennifer Reuning Myers (violin performer and teacher in NYS), Harold Levin (violist and professor at Marywood University (PA)), and Karen Kaderavek (cellist from Montreal, professor at John Abbott College). We will begin with rehearsals, and then travel and perform in quite a few places in the country.
What makes this program particularly unique is the cultural exchange, which is a very important part of the program. We will be staying with host families for part of the stay, and will also see much of the country. Please go to the website www.thailandcmf.org to learn more about it, and look at the gorgeous pictures there, under "Attractions", "Lodging and Meals", and "Gallery".
John and Nok just returned from a visit to Thailand to finalize performing venues, host families, hotels and restaurants, activities (they were particularly excited about the boat trip to Phi Phi Island), and are thrilled with how everything has fallen into place.
Deposit is due March 31 (for best deals on plane fare).
