Dean Search Update

The search for a new Dean of The Hartt School has entered its final phase. Four candidates have visited the University of Hartford campus in the past month to meet with faculty, staff and students.  Participating on the search committee has made me realize that searching for a new leader is as much about self-examination as it is about vetting external candidates.

What is the identity of The Hartt School?  What does the outside world think of us?  How do convert our great potential into a blossoming reality?  What combination of qualities do we seek in a leader?  How will a new dean impact the mission of the Community Division?

An announcement about the new dean is expected from the Provost within the next four to six weeks.   Regardless of the outcome, the Community Division is well positioned to provide excellent service and leadership in performing arts education.

SRIMF

The Sulzbach-Rosenberg International Music Festival (SRIMF) offers you the opportunity to spend two weeks in Bavaria with an internationally renowned faculty consisting of many well known soloists and chamber musicians. The festival faculty combine their international experience with elements of the famous Russian School to produce a unique and invaluable environment for learning and growth. This two week experience will allow students to significantly develop their musical abilities, achieve artistic growth, elevate their professional training and network with fellow musicians.
The festival will be held in the city of Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Bavaria and will offer each student four private one-hour lessons, ample practice facilities, the opportunity to perform with various ensembles coached by faculty members and the opportunity to participate in and attend master classes offered on various instruments. There will be numerous festival concerts, many of which will be open to the public. In addition, there will be planned excursions to a variety of fascinating destinations in the area.

Sulzbach-Rosenberg is a picturesque Bavarian town that is more than twelve hundred years old. It is located on the “Golden Road,” which runs from Nuremberg to Prague. The town is located 50 km from Nuremberg and 80 km from Regensburg.

The festival will take place at the Sing- and Musikschule (SMS). Festival participants will be housed in the facilities of Hotel-Gasthof Bayerischer Hof.
A complimentary shuttle service* will be provided to and from Nuremberg Airport at the beginning and end of the festival: On August 4, 2009 the shuttle to Sulzbach-Rosenberg will depart at 12:00pm/Noon from Nuremberg airport. For one half-hour prior to the shuttle’s departure, beginning at 11:30am, a festival representative will be at the gate at Nuremberg Airport to greet festival participants and guide them to the shuttle.

The last concert of the festival will take place on the evening of August 15, 2009. On August 16, 2009 the shuttle will depart from Sulzbach-Rosenberg at 8:00am for Nuremberg Airport. (Approximate travel time from Sulzbach-Rosenberg to the Airport is 45 minutes).

Thailand Chamber Music Festival:  December 26, 2009 to January 9, 2010

Announcing a new chamber music festival that will take place in Thailand directed by John Lindsey and his wife, Nok. John has participated in many overseas chamber music festivals and has seen first hand what works and what does not work, and is using this experience and knowledge in putting together a well- organized and unique festival. Nok is a native of Thailand, so she has personal connections and an intimate relationship with this country.

The festival takes place from December 26, 2009 - January 9, 2010. It is for violin, viola, and cello students between the ages of 17 and 25, who will play in string quartets. They will be coached by John Lindsey
(performer and professor of violin at Crane (Potsdam)), Jennifer Reuning Myers (violin performer and teacher in NYS), Harold Levin (violist and professor at Marywood University (PA)), and Karen Kaderavek (cellist from Montreal, professor at John Abbott College). We will begin with rehearsals, and then travel and perform in quite a few places in the country.

What makes this program particularly unique is the cultural exchange, which is a very important part of the program. We will be staying with host families for part of the stay, and will also see much of the country. Please go to the website www.thailandcmf.org to learn more about it, and look at the gorgeous pictures there, under "Attractions", "Lodging and Meals", and "Gallery".

John and Nok just returned from a visit to Thailand to finalize performing venues, host families, hotels and restaurants, activities (they were particularly excited about the boat trip to Phi Phi Island), and are thrilled with how everything has fallen into place.

Deposit is due March 31 (for best deals on plane fare).
