Words from the Director

Holiday “Thank You” Gifts for Teachers

It has become customary in The Hartt School Community Division, and in most community performing arts schools in the world, for families to express their appreciation to teachers at holiday time with small gifts.  While no teacher solicits these gifts, they are invariably and sincerely appreciated.  There is absolutely no institutional expectation that students or families should reward teachers with gifts at holiday time.  It just always seems to happen.

Because the Community Division is relatively large, it occurred to me some time ago that the sum total of hundreds of little appreciations is quite significant.  As the holidays approach this year, I wanted to provide teachers and families the opportunity to channel that significance in a more focused way.
Enter the Hartt Holiday Gift Program or H2Gp.

If families are inclined to offer, and teachers are inclined to participate, the option will exist for teachers to direct their gifts to one of three funds:

  1. The Fund for Access, the Community Division’s tuition assistance program for families in need.
  2. The Parent Education Fund of the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
  3. An individual teacher’s personal professional development account.

Teachers can choose not to participate in this effort (some teachers very much need things like gift certificates) and they will receive no pressure to do so.  This is simply a way for willing teachers and families to do some good.

In the coming weeks, you may be handed information regarding H2Gp Hartt Holiday Gift Program.  Information will also be available in the Community Division main office, Handel Performing Arts Center, Simsmore Square and at www.hcd.hartford.edu.  Thank you for being the great community that you are.

Congratulations to the Hartt Community Division Viola Tour Group!

On Sunday, November 2, the Hartt Community Division Viola Tour group performed to enthusiastic response on the New York Viola Society concert series at the Sage Theater in Time Square. The concert, billed as "Viola Varsity", marked the very first time that the New York Viola society has featured pre-college age performers on their series. The board members of the New York Viola Society were thrilled with the concert and wrote immediately to congratulate our students on their performance, complimenting their level of preparation, polish, and professionalism, and inviting the group to perform on the series again next year!

We want to send a special thanks to all of the parents of the members of the Viola Tour group who made arrangements to travel to New York, and thanks to Rachel Gray, piano student of Dr. Zhong Chen, and cello student of Carmen Irons, who accompanied the tour group on the piano. It was a wonderful day and the Hartt Community Division was well represented in New York City!

Important Notice for Suzuki Families
Reminders about expectations for our time at the church

November, 2008

We are fortunate that we’re able to have many of our lessons and group classes in a location where part of their mission is so compatible with Dr. Suzuki’s ultimate goal of using music to help develop children’s ability to mature into adults who are noble human beings with beautiful hearts.  While we do occupy quite a bit of space, we are not the only guests at the UUC, and we need to make sure that the respect with which we treat the space, and our awareness of others, allows everyone to go about their business with the appropriate attitude and energy.  To that end, here are some reminders about expectations for our time at the church:

*  Children, whether students or siblings, should always be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult during their time in the church.

  1. Children should not be out in the hallways by themselves at any time.
  2. Toys and books to which we have access are those in the bookcase in the 2nd floor hallway.  Please do not use the toys in any of the classrooms; these are sanitized at the end of each Sunday’s activities to be ready for the following week.

* Restrooms available for our use are outside of Fiske Hall on the main level, and in the far corner of the lower level.  Please do not use the restrooms in the wings of the church offices.  Please also monitor your children for appropriate use of toilet paper in the toilets, as well as making sure that stall doors are unlocked as you leave.
* The portico (glassed-area) should only be used for entering and leaving the building; it is not an appropriate place to spend time while waiting for a class.  This is both to ensure the safety of our children, and to allow those coming in for such things as bereavement counseling, yoga, etc. to have call and quiet as they enter the building.

* Please make sure that you are not parking in a spot that is marked in any way unless you have a handicapped tag, and then please park only in spots marked as handicapped parking.  Church personnel have spots designated for clergy and staff, and need to be able to access them at all times, in case there is a pastoral emergency.  As we all know, emergencies never limit themselves to business hours.

* The church property is non-smoking.  This includes the parking lot.

* There are a number of students and parents who are severely asthmatic, and have allergies to various colognes and scented soaps.  Please be thoughtful and courteous so that all of our student families are able to participate in our activities.  Already this year, there have been instances where a family has had to leave group class because the scents have caused a parent to be unable to breathe.
The church has been very generous in donating space for some of our special activities, and Mark has been further developing our relationship with the church by his participation in some of their Sunday services.  The church is very quick to address any concerns that we bring to their attention, making sure that we have appropriate lighting late at night, that our lessons are not disrupted by other tenants, making sure the restrooms are appropriately equipped and operational, and providing toys and games that are available for our use on the second floor.

Thank you for your help as we continue to grow both our program and our relationship with the church.
Mark George, Director
M. Diane Slone, Hartt Liaison to the UUC

International Young Soloists Program has been seeking to identify talented musicians who have a disability.

VSA arts

Creating a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts

Join us for our Spring 2009 Artist Showcase at Nayaug Elementary School, Glastonbury

Since 1984, the VSA arts International Young Soloists Program has been seeking to identify talented musicians who have a disability. The VSA arts International Young Soloists Award is given annually to four outstanding musicians, two from the United States and two from the international arena. The award provides an opportunity for these emerging musicians to each earn a $5,000 award and a performance in Washington, D.C.

Eligibility
Any individual musician (instrumental or vocal) from the United States who has a disability, age 25 and under, is eligible to apply. Any individual musician (instrumental or vocal) from outside the United States who has a disability, age 30 and under, is eligible to apply. Individual musicians should complete the Individual Musician Application Form.  Applications from musical ensembles (two to eight members) will be accepted for the International Young Soloists Award. This includes any type of ensemble from a rock band to a chamber ensemble to a drum corps. In order to be eligible, at least one member of the ensemble must have a disability. All members of the ensemble must fulfill age requirements as stated above. The ensemble should complete the Ensemble Application Form.  All types of music will be accepted, including but not limited to Rock/Alt Rock, Pop, Indie, Classical, Country/Folk, Jazz, R&B/Blues, Hip Hop/Rap, Latin, and World.  As defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, a disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. (An impairment is a physiological disorder affecting one or more of a number of body systems, or a mental or psychological disorder.)

Selection Process
An advisory committee comprised of music professionals and educators will assist with the selection process. Selections will be announced in January 2009.

Selection Criteria
The VSA arts International Young Soloists Award advisory committee will evaluate each audition recording in the areas of technique, tone, rhythm, interpretation, and intonation (if applicable).

United States Affiliate Selection Process
All VSA arts United States affiliates implement their own International Young Soloists Award programs. Applicants must send their entry materials to the appropriate address for their state, as found on www.vsarts.org . Entries received at the VSA arts headquarters from United States soloists will be forwarded to their state affiliate for initial evaluation. Entries from all states are then forwarded to the VSA arts headquarters for consideration in the national adjudication.

Selection Process for International Applicants
All applicants from outside the United States should submit their application form, biographical description, and recording to:
VSA arts International Young Soloists Award
818 Connecticut Avenue, NW
Suite 600
Washington, D.C. 20006

Application Procedures Checklist
Each applicant is required to submit the following materials:
_ Completed and signed Individual Musician OR Ensemble Application Form.
_ One-page narrative including biographical information and the reasons why the
applicant feels he/she should be selected as the recipient of the 2009 VSA arts
International Young Soloists Award. This information should focus on the applicant’s
musical training and experience and not the applicant’s disability.
A recording (CD,_ DVD, VHS or audio tape) presenting three (3) musical selections. A CD or DVD format recording is preferred. Video tapes from camcorders will not be accepted.

Hints: The music and artistry should be easily heard on your recording. It isn't necessary for the selections to be from one performance, but they should represent recent performances. Since the selected performers will not be permitted to use recorded music in their performance, applicants must use live accompaniment on the audition recording. We recommend that you not perform contrasting styles on your recording. Pick what you do best and stick to it!

Application materials should be sent to the appropriate address found on www.vsarts.org  and received no later than November 15, 2008 for United States musicians and December 1, 2008 for musicians outside the United States.

All’s Fair in Love and War?!
The Avery Ensemble begins its 2008-2009 concert series

2

Avery Ensemble begins it 2008-2009 concert series, All’s Fair in Love and War?!, with performances of the first
program, Uncommon Valor, in New London this Friday, Nov.14 at St. James Episcopal Church, 76 Federal St., and in Willimantic this Saturday, Nov.15 at the Capitol Theater, 896 Main St..  A final performance of the program will take place in Hartford on Friday, Dec.12 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 120 Sigourney St.. All series performances will begin at 7:30 pm. The other two programs in the series, entitled Fools Rush In… and Lest We Forget will be presented at the same three venues in February and April (New London, Feb.13 & April 17; Willimantic, Feb.14 & April 4; Hartford, Feb.27 & April 3). Subscriptions for the three-program series are $50 per person. Individual tickets are $20 (children’s subscriptions and tickets are half-price). The series features chamber music masterpieces by Brahms and Beethoven, virtuoso Baroque music by Rameau and Farina, and will also include two Connecticut premieres of works by world-renowned composers John Adams and Aaron Jay Kernis. The ensemble’s core personnel, Adriana Jarvis—piano & harpsichord, Annie Trépanier—violin, Steve Larson—viola, and Hans Twitchell—cello & bass viol, will be joined by guests in Feb. and April.

The upcoming program, Uncommon Valor, uses Brahms’ beautiful Piano Quartet in A-major, Op.26 and several other works to weave a musical narrative exploring conflict and heroism. Our desire to honor the courage of those who have exercised bravery in finding alternative responses to violence brought us into contact with two pieces by American composers written in response to the Bosnian War (1992—1995). David Wilde’s The Cellist of Sarajevo: A Lament in Rondo Form for Solo Cello, Op. 12, commemorates Vedran Smilovic, former principal cellist of the Sarajevo Opera for his courageous, musical protest of the killing of twenty-two individuals waiting in line for bread during the siege of Sarajevo. The second work is a brilliant and beautiful masterpiece by Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Aaron Jay Kernis: Still Movement with Hymn (1993) for piano quartet.  Written in part out of shock at the events unfolding in Bosnia, the composer also notes that it “at times suggest a Judeo-Christian prayer for the dead, a hymn and Kaddish that also embodies hope for the living.”  Colored with these associations, Brahms’ epic and sublime piano quartet becomes our offering to peaceful heroes.

3

The Avery Ensemble has been hailed as "an utter delight" by the Hartford Advocate and as "simply outstanding" by Classical Voice of New England. Classical.net calls their playing “gorgeous… almost mad with excitement” with “a wonderful feeling of collaboration…even as their hearts are aflame.”

Tickets will be available at the door. To order advanced subscriptions or tickets, send a check to Avery Concerts, 143 Maplewood Ave., West Hartford, CT 06119. Checks should be made payable to Avery Concerts. Please include a phone number and/or an email address to receive a confirmation. Tickets will be held at the door unless otherwise requested. Reservations can also be made by calling (860) 523-8931 or emailing info@averyensemble.org.  For more information about the Avery Ensemble, please visit www.averyensemble.org.
