FREE Chamber Music Concerts by Hartt’s Performance 20/20 Honors Chamber Music Program in Hartt’s newly renovated Berkman Auditorium

Performance 20/20, The Hartt School’s highly selective chamber music scholarship program, opens its 2008-2009 season Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, October 19, 2008 at 3 pm in the newly renovated Berkman Auditorium at The University of Hartford in West Hartford. Saturday’s program, “French & Friendly,” and Sunday’s program, “Rich & Romantic,” will feature performances by more than 30 of Hartt’s finest musicians playing works ranging from traditional string quartets to newly composed works for piano, percussion, and electronics.

The Saturday evening program, “French & Friendly,” traces France’s long history of imaginative, sometimes whimsical, chamber music with performances of traditional pieces such as Francis Poulenc’s Sextour for woodwind quintet and piano and Eugene Bozza’s Sonatine for brass quintet, as well as newer works composed for more unusual instrument combinations, including Francois-Bernard Mache’s Hierogamie for piccolo and percussion and John Luther Adams’ Red Arc/Blue Veil for piano, percussion, and processed electronic sound.

Sunday’s matinee program, “Rich & Romantic,” delves into some of the Romantic Era’s most luscious chamber works by the most prominent composers of the time. Highlighting this concert will be the sensuous melodies of Alexander Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2, Rachmoninoff’s uplifting Suite in C Major for Two Pianos, and Antonín Dvořák’s invigorating Quintet for String Quartet and Double-bass in G Major.

These opening 20/20 performance concerts will give audiences one of the first chances to experience the newly renovated Berkman Auditorium. Formerly a black-box theater venue used by the Hartt School Theater Division, Berkman Auditorium has been transformed into a beautiful, intimate hall that will be used exclusively for musical performances. (Theater Division performances will now be held at the new Handel Performing Arts Center.)

Performance 20/20, The Hartt School’s honors chamber music program, is comprised of some of the finest instrumentalists, both undergraduate and graduate, from around the world.  This scholarship program provides exceptional opportunities for highly talented and motivated young performers, including intensive coaching sessions with Hartt Faculty (including the Miami String Quartet and the Lion’s Gate Trio) on works from the chamber repertoire, both traditional and contemporary; master classes with guest artists; and collaborations with resident and guest composers on new works created especially for the group. Performance 20/20 presents its own concert series at Hartt as well as performing at venues throughout Connecticut. These programs feature chamber music from the traditional repertoire as well as from the newest composers, using innovative combinations of instruments.

FREE Group Theory Classes for HCD Private Lesson Students  ~  Classes forming now!

Any student who is enrolled in private lessons through The Hartt School Community Division is eligible to attend group theory lessons. The classes listed below are taught by Mr. Ertan Sener.

If you are interested in attending a class, please come to class at the appropriate time listed below. Classes will be held on Saturdays in Room 422.

Intermediate Theory: 9-9:30 a.m., We will study triads and seventh chords, and begin to learn the rules of voice-leading in the classical style through short chorale-style compositions and analysis.

Music History: 9:30-10 a.m., ages 8 and over. The study of music history gives students insight into how the Western musical traditions and styles developed. We will begin with the Baroque Era, and work our
way forward chronologically, listening to representative pieces from the repertoire. Even if you did not come last year, please come this year; no previous knowledge is necessary, and all are welcome!

Advanced Theory: 10-10:30 a.m., for returning students. During the year we will study part-writing and counterpoint, and begin a study of form, focusing on examples for analysis and structural listening.

Intermediate Theory and Ear Training: 10:30-11 a.m., ages 14 and over, for new and returning students. Most college music programs require a proficiency exam for placement in music theory/aural skills classes; now is the time to practice those skills! We will cover basic part-writing, sight-singing with solfege, and melodic and harmonic dictation. Knowledge of scales, key signatures, intervals, and triads is preferred.

Beginning Theory: 11-11:30 a.m., ages 8-12, for new and returning students. We will review scales and key signatures, and continue with intervals and chords. Prerequisite: Students must be able to identify
notes on the staff in at least one clef.

Beginning Theory: 11:30-12 noon, ages 12 and over. Students with no theory training are welcome; we will start “from scratch” studying scales, key signatures, intervals, and triads. Each class will begin with a brief listening example and discussion to begin thinking about music in theoretical terms. Prerequisite: Students must be able to identify notes on the staff in at least one clef.
