Words from the Director

Investment Advice for Scary Times

The Dow has plummeted.  Real estate values are sinking.  The credit market is frozen.  Financial giants are collapsing.  The likes of Donald Trump and Warren Buffett have weighed in on investment opportunities.  Suze Orman, Lou Dobbs, Jim Cramer and even Doctor Phil have offered investment advice.  But the safest and most lucrative investment is still in the education of our children.  What value do we place on intelligent and motivated young people?

We don’t invest in music or dance education because we think our children will become stars (though that might be the result). We invest because participation in the performing arts produces students who are engaged, sensitive and resourceful.  We invest because we want our children to be successful.  We invest because we want our children to be contributors to the collective good. We invest because we want our children to enjoy the richness of life.  We invest in our children because we want them to be happy.

The Hartt School Community Division is in the business of developing creative, good hearted and productive citizens.  Students receive lessons they will draw on forever.  They have experiences they will remember for a lifetime.

The Community Division appreciates the trust you have put in us.  Our institution is strong and solvent.  Our assets are many, our liabilities are few.  We operate with the knowledge that what we do is of great importance because when a community invests in its young, the futures market booms.

Dr. Mark George, Director
Hartt Community Division

SIGHT READING PARTIES ARE BACK!

Starting THIS FRIDAY, October 3rd, SIGHT READING PARTIES ARE BACK! Come join us on Friday evenings in Room 342 from 7:30-9 for sight reading fun (and tasty treats). The schedule for this fall includes: Oct 3, Oct 10, Oct 17, Nov 7, Nov 14, Dec 5, Dec 12, Jan 16, Jan 23.

String students from the following ensembles and groups are welcome and invited to attend: Intermezzo, Vivace, Opus, Concert Ensemble, and CYS.

We will begin the party with the most accessible sight reading and progress throughout the evening to more difficult music. Depending on the numbers of students at different levels who attend, the evening will look something like this:

7:30-8 Intermezzo level sight reading
8-8:30 Vivace/Concert Ensemble level reading
8:30-9 Opus/CYS level reading

Everyone is invited to attend for the whole hour and a half, but we will "tailor" the reading to the levels of the students who come. Faculty and college students are invited and encouraged to come and play alongside the students! Come, and bring a stand and a tasty treat to share.

Please check the HCD Ensemble Schedule in the future for reminders about Sight Reading Party Dates!

Music Composition Classes Start Oct. 26

The Inter-District Music Composition Program will be returning this year with classes starting on Oct. 26.  As members of this program, students will work in small groups with one of the faculty composers, Ken Steen and Jessica Rudman. Students will learn to use notation or MIDI sequencing and digital audio software to communicate their musical ideas as well as compositional techniques used to create music. Our goal is to provide each student with the skills to develop his/her own voice as a composer, and small class size will allow students to spend a considerable amount of time on individual projects, which can then be featured on the end of year concert. This year, we will be offering four class levels:

~ Intro to Electronic Music Composition
~ Intro to Music Composition
~ Intermediate Music Composition
~ Advanced Music Composition

The program offers free tuition for students enrolled in grades 7 - 12 at a public, charter or magnet school.
Tuition for private or home-schooled students will be $100 for the year.  Registration materials are available in the Hartt Community Division Office and will be available online shortly.  Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.  Registration materials must be received by Monday, Oct. 13, 2008.

For more information or to receive registration materials, please contact Jessica Rudman at rudman@hartford.edu.
