The Alturas Duo will perform David Macbride’s ¡No Más Muertes! (No More Deaths!),
The Alturas Duo will perform David Macbride’s ¡No Más Muertes! (No More Deaths!), with narration by Macbride, on Thursday, October 30, at 7 pm, in the Clarice L. Buckman Theater at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut.
The concert is free and open to the public.
Composer David Macbride ’73 is a professor of composition and theory at The Hartt School and a Hartt alumnus. The Alturas Duo is made up of Carlos Boltes ’04 on viola and Scott Hill ’02, ’04 on guitar. They both are on the faculty of the Hartt Community Division.
¡No Más Muertes! was commissioned by the Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation New Works Initiative and written for the Alturas Duo. The piece is about illegal immigrants crossing the border between Mexico and the United States, and how some, tragically, do not survive the journey. The text is primarily taken from Luis Alberto Urrea’s The Devil’s Highway, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated book about undocumented immigrants who died of dehydration in the Arizona desert.
“The idea is not to take sides, but to open up a discussion on the issue of immigration and human trafficking,” Hill said. “Usually, after we perform the piece, we encourage questions from the audience.”
Boltes, a native of Santiago, Chile, and Hill, a native of Ontario, Canada, formed the Alturas Duo in 2001 to combine South American folk rhythms and classical music. They have performed in Carnegie Hall; the Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian Institute; the Chilean and Venezuelan embassies in Washington, D.C.; and at the 34th International Viola Congress in Québec City. The Duo also won first prize in the folk category at the 2006 New England International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition.

It’s Snowing. How Do I Know if Classes are Cancelled?
With winter just around the corner, now is a good time for a quick reminder about the University’s policies on weather-related closings.
Because the University of Hartford is a highly residential institution, it is critical to maintain its operations and schedules. Generally, the University will not close except under unusual circumstances.
In the event of a severe weather condition or other emergency, there are several ways to find out if the University is open and if classes are delayed or cancelled.
Web Alert
The simplest and quickest way is through the University's Web Alert system. Just go to www.hartford.edu or http://uhaweb.hartford.edu — if there is a weather advisory or emergency announcement, it will be displayed prominently at the top of the page.
Telephone
You can also check for weather-related closings and emergency announcements by phone. From off campus, call 860.768.4100. From campus residences and offices, dial “0.”
Text Message Notification Service
Emergency closing alerts will be sent via text message to those cell phone numbers registered with UHTXT, the University’s text message notification system. To sign up, go to www.hartford.edu/alert.
Radio and Television
On the radio, WTIC (1080 AM and 96.5 FM), WRCH (100.5 FM), and WWUH (91.3 FM), offer information about winter storm closings. If you prefer to follow winter storm coverage on TV, please be aware that Channel 3 (WFSB-TV) is the only local television station that allows colleges to post specific opening and closing times. If you see announcements on Channel 8 (WTNH) or Channel 30 (WVIT) you should follow up by checking the Web Alert system or calling 860.768.4100.
