Words from the Director

New Stuff in the Fuller Building

The Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center is not the only new facility the Community Division will enjoy this year.  In the Fuller Building on the campus of the University of Hartford, Berkman Auditorium has been completely redesigned and renovated. The Berkman space will serve as an excellent music recital hall, instead of the all-purpose black box theater it had become.  The first-floor restrooms have also been completely renovated (so please – submit no more nominations for, “Worst bathroom on the planet.”).  Still to come are carpeting and benches in the hallways around Berkman Auditorium.  Renovation of the second-floor restroom will begin shortly.

Slowly but surely The Hartt School is upgrading its facilities.  The quality of our faculty and students already exceeds expectations.  Soon we will have facilities to match.

Dr. Mark George, Director
The Hartt School Community Division

Music Composition Classes (grades 7-12)  - Registration Deadline is Monday, Oct. 13!

The Inter-District Music Composition Program will be returning this year with classes starting on Oct. 26.  Space is still available, and registration materials can be downloaded from the Community Division website or picked up in the Community Division Office.  Forms should be submitted by Oct. 13 to reserve a spot (though late applications may be accepted as space allows).

As members of this program, students will work in small groups with one of the faculty composers, Ken Steen and Jessica Rudman. Students will learn to use notation or MIDI sequencing and digital audio software to communicate their musical ideas as well as compositional techniques used to create music. Our goal is to provide each student with the skills to develop his/her own voice as a composer, and small class size will allow students to spend a considerable amount of time on individual projects, which can then be featured on the end of year concert. This year, we will be offering four class levels:

.    Intro to Electronic Music Composition
.    Intro to Music Composition
.    Intermediate Music Composition
.    Advanced Music Composition

The program offers free tuition for students enrolled in grades 7 - 12 at a public, charter or magnet school.

Tuition for private or home-schooled students will be $100 for the year.

CLICK HERE to download the registration materials!

For more information or to receive registration materials, please contact Jessica Rudman at rudman@hartford.edu

FREE Group Theory Classes for HCD Private Lesson Students  ~  Classes are forming now!

Any student who is enrolled in private lessons through The Hartt School Community Division is eligible to attend group theory lessons. The classes listed below are taught by Mr. Ertan Sener.

If you are interested in attending a class, please come to the second class on Saturday, October 11th at the appropriate time listed below. Classes will be held on Saturdays in Room 422.

Intermediate Theory: 9-9:30 a.m., We will study triads and seventh chords, and begin to learn the rules of voice-leading in the classical style through short chorale-style compositions and analysis.

Music History: 9:30-10 a.m., ages 8 and over. The study of music history gives students insight into how the Western musical traditions and styles developed. We will begin with the Baroque Era, and work our
way forward chronologically, listening to representative pieces from the repertoire. Even if you did not come last year, please come this year; no previous knowledge is necessary, and all are welcome!

Advanced Theory: 10-10:30 a.m., for returning students. During year we will study part-writing and counterpoint, and begin a study of form, focusing on examples for analysis and structural listening.

Intermediate Theory and Ear Training: 10:30-11 a.m., ages 14 and over, for new and returning students. Most college music programs require a proficiency exam for placement in music theory/aural skills classes; now is the time to practice those skills! We will cover basic part-writing, sight-singing with solfege, and melodic and harmonic dictation. Knowledge of scales, key signatures, intervals, and triads is preferred.

Beginning Theory: 11-11:30 a.m., ages 8-12, for new and returning students. We will review scales and key signatures, and continue with intervals and chords. Prerequisite: Students must be able to identify
notes on the staff in at least one clef.

Beginning Theory: 11:30-12 noon, ages 12 and over. Students with no theory training are welcome; we will start “from scratch” studying scales, key signatures, intervals, and triads. Each class will begin with a
brief listening example and discussion to begin thinking about music in theoretical terms. Prerequisite: Students must be able to identify notes on the staff in at least one clef.
