The excitement is building for the first-ever Five-Percent Day at Whole Foods Market in West Hartford Center. The event happens on Wednesday, September 17, 8:00am – 10:00pm. Five Percent of Whole Foods Market’s total revenue for that day will be donated to the Fund for Access, the Community Division’s tuition assistance program for families in need. Community Division students will be performing at the store that day, so be sure to stop by and offer them your encouragement.

FIRST STEPS IN MUSIC classes start this week!
First Steps in Music is a series of music and movement classes for youngsters from birth to age five and a caregiver. These classes are part of the National Center for the Arts in the Early Years. The Center, jointly administered by The Hartt School's Music Education Department and the Community Division, firmly believes that early involvement of preschool children in relaxed music and movement activities is an important "first step" in musical development. The goal of our classes is to enable all children to reach their full potential in music and movement through informal activities based on a rich body of traditional children's folk songs and rhymes.
The First Steps in Music program is designed to provide a fun, exciting musical experience both in and out of the classroom. Each class begins with 10 to 15 minutes of exploratory play that allows students to informally investigate various sound-making devices. The remainder of the class time is spent in a series of casual music and movement activities and games. Additionally, all main campus participants have access to a lending library of music books, tapes, CD's, videos and musical toys. Parents are provided a set of expectations for class once enrolled to facilitate the needs of the instructor and other parents.

From the Studio of Carmen Irons
Julia Hamilton, a "veteran" of the Hartt Suzuki program, is attending College of the Holy Cross and was awarded the Brooks Music Scholarship which is a full tuition scholarship for all 4 years of study. Julia grew up playing in all the Suzuki Orchestras, & eventually joined CYS where she was Assistant Principal Cello. She also performed in a string quartet with other CYS members Kendra Nealon, Zoe Li, and Kim Martin which was coached by Mickey Reisman. As a freshman, Julia was principal cello of the Eastern Regionals High School Orchestra and later was Assistant Principal Cello of the Connecticut All State Orchestra.
An accomplished vocalist as well as cellist, Julia studied voice at Hartt with Jack Pott. She sang with the Hartt High School Chamber Choir, the Eastern Regionals High School Choir, and the Connecticut All State High School Choir. Julia also sang the leads in several musicals both at Timothy Edwards Middle School and South Windsor High School.
Congratulations Julia!

Joshua Bell and the HSO
We would like to encourage our students, friends, and their families to attend the Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s Opening Night Concert and Celebration with Joshua Bell. The HSO understands how important music is as well as how important the experience of live performance can be in making real the power and accomplishment of a musician in the world of classical music.
Joshua Bell is the product of a strong musical education. After picking up a violin at the age of 4 he has gone on to become one of the most celebrated violinists of our time. The Hartford Symphony knows that it can be a life-changing experience to see someone of Joshua Bell’s caliber perform live. We would be delighted if you, your students, and their families were able to be present as Joshua Bell performs with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra for the first time at this once in a lifetime celebration.
