Cheryl Smith, Associate Director, Artists Collective, Inc.

Cheryl L. Smith was appointed to Associate Director in April 2005.
In 1970, after meeting Artists Collective Founder, Jackie McLean, and Dollie McLean, Founding Executive Director, Cheryl was invited to become a co-founder of the Artists Collective.
Ms. Smith taught dance and later became the Director of the Dance Department. Ten years prior to her appointment in 2005, Ms. Smith functioned in a leadership position as Program Director.
Studying dance with Phyllis Stone and Angela Bowen-Peters, Cheryl went on to become the Director of Dance at Westledge School in Simsbury. She also taught at the Watkinson School in West Hartford, the University of Connecticut, Trinity College, as well as numerous public schools.

A native of Connecticut, Ms. Smith has taught and performed throughout the state since the 1960’s.
In her position as Associate Director, Ms. Smith’s duties continue to include artistic administration and management functions of the day-to-day operations of the Artists Collective. She continues to inspire hundreds of Greater Hartford youth and adults and is an integral part of the leadership at the Artists Collective.
Cheryl Smith has received many community awards including most recently, The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs “Sojourner Truth Meritorious Service Award.”

As a choreographer, he has created over 50 repertory works for student and professional companies ranging in style from classical to modern to musical theater including full-length versions of The Nutcracker, Coppélia, and Cinderella. From 1981-1985, Barker served as resident choreographer for Connecticut Ballet and from 1985-2000, he choreographed for Yale Opera, New Haven Symphony, Orchestra New England, and Chancel Opera Company. During the last six years, Noble and his wife, Ruth Barker, served as Artistic Director and Ballet Mistress respectively for Northampton’s Pioneer Valley Ballet School and Company and later their own school and company in neighboring Hadley, MA. The Barkers are currently living in Hamden with their five-year-old daughter Eliza and are delighted to have returned to the area.

Joshua Bell & The Hartford Symphony Orchestra!

photo from http://www.joshuabell.com/
We would like to encourage our students, friends, and their families to attend the Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s Opening Night Concert and Celebration with Joshua Bell. The HSO understands how important music is as well as how important the experience of live performance can be in making real the power and accomplishment of a musician in the world of classical music.
Joshua Bell is the product of a strong musical education. After picking up a violin at the age of 4 he has gone on to become one of the most celebrated violinists of our time. The Hartford Symphony knows that seeing someone of Joshua Bell’s caliber perform live can be a life-changing experience. We would be delighted if you, your students, and their families were able to be present as Joshua Bell performs with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra for the first time at this once-in-a-lifetime celebration.
