Mission
The Hartt School Community Division of the University of Hartford is a comprehensive community arts school providing instruction in music and dance for individuals of all ages and experience levels. The mission of the Community Division is three-fold:
With locations in West Hartford, Hartford, Simsbury, South Windsor, and Middletown, the Hartt Community Division is able to serve students throughout Connecticut. History The Community Division was founded in 1920 by Julius Hartt and Moshe Paranov, and developed concurrently with the Hartt College of Music, which became known eventually as The Hartt School after joining with the University of Hartford in 1957. The Hartt School Community Division is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Community & Pre-College Art Schools and is an active member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts. Hartt is viewed as a national model for community schools based on university campuses, being one of the largest and most evolved programs in the country. The Benefits of Studying the Performing Arts In choosing to have your child study the performing arts, you open a window to his or her imagination and creativity that can remain open for a lifetime. Children who study music, dance, or theater often have a higher level of achievement in school and in other endeavors. They learn important life skills such as discipline and dedication. They also discover constructive and positive ways to express their thoughts and feelings while exploring their artistic side and building self-confidence. Instruction in the performing arts can greatly enrich the lives of adults as well as children. Classes in music or dance provide a creative outlet for anyone looking to try something new, to rekindle an old interest, or to further a continuing passion for the arts. Most importantly, studying music, dance, or theater is fun for all ages! Why Choose the Hartt Community Division? The Hartt Community Division is able to offer a wide variety of programs including private music lessons and ensembles, fitness and dance classes, pre-professional programs for high school students, and a theater program for elementary school children. Our diverse music offerings include: First Steps in Music (an innovative class for children up to age 5 with a parent), traditional private lessons, Suzuki lessons and group classes, a variety of instrumental ensembles for children and adults, a children's chorus, courses in early music, and music composition classes. The Dance Department runs classes such as: pre-ballet for pre-school students, intensive ballet and modern dance, hip hop, yoga, pilates, and tango. Such extensive offerings allow students of all ages to find programs that suit their individual interests and ability levels. To further serve as many students as possible, we offer financial aid to pre-college students with -demonstrated need. Our faculty is made up of trained professionals from diverse backgrounds. Many of our teachers have years of experience providing children and adults with instruction in music, dance, or theater. Hartt Community Division faculty members are adept at helping students of all ability and experience levels to develop their skills, while inspiring a deep love of the performing arts.
