About the First Steps Program First Steps in Music is a series of music and movement classes for youngsters from birth to age five with their parents. These classes are part of the National Center for the Arts in the Early Years. The Center, jointly administered by The Hartt School's Music Education Department and the Community Division, firmly believes that early involvement of preschool children in relaxed music and movement activities is an important "first step" in musical development. The goal of our classes is to enable all children to reach their full potential in music and movement through informal activities based on a rich body of traditional children's folk songs and rhymes. The First Steps in Music program is designed to provide a fun, exciting musical experience both in and out of the classroom. Each class begins with 10 to 15 minutes of exploratory play that allows students to informally investigate various sound-making devices. The remainder of the class time is spent in a series of casual music and movement activities and games. Additionally, all participants have access to a lending library of music books, tapes, CD's, videos and musical toys. Parents are provided a set of expectations for class once enrolled to facilitate the needs of the instructor and other parents.
